For those planning to travel or attend parties in and around Macon this weekend, the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office has advice to stay safe.

For those going out of town, the sheriff’s office advised securely locking all windows and doors. They also suggested to not post vacation pictures on social media before getting back home.

Those going on road trips should check their tire air pressure, and make sure their vehicle is road-ready. The sheriff’s office told people to slow down and drive safely. Highway congestion during holidays increases the risk of injuries and fatalities, so it’s important to wear a seatbelt. Wearing a seatbelt reduces the risk of death in drivers by 45%, according to the National Safety Council.

For those getting in the water this weekend, don’t swim alone, the sheriff’s office says. Children also should always be supervised in or around water and everyone should wear a life vest while boating.

For those spending time in the sun, they should use plenty of sunscreen and stay hydrated

Finally, don’t drink and drive. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, one person dies from drunk driving every 39 minutes.

The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office said its deputies will specifically watch for impaired drivers among other traffic violations.
