Taconic Hills baseball tops Little Falls, advances to play for Class B state championship

ENDICOTT - "One bad inning."

It's a common lament from baseball's coaches, players and fans after a disappointing loss. They were the first three words from Little Falls coach Bob Gollegly and repeated by many others after the Mounties ended their season with a 9-6 loss to Taconic Hills in a state Class B semifinal at Union-Endicott High School.

The surprising Mounties (12-13) never led against the champions from Section II, but their chances went rapidly downhill after closing to within one run in the fourth inning.

Hitless and trailing 3-0, Little Falls saw its first two batters retired to start the bottom of the fourth. Taconic Hills left-hander Zach Rowe then walked Ben Gonzalez, Bill Macri and Xavier Dunn, the nos. 7, 8 and 9 batters, to load the bases. He also walked Braden McCumber to force the first Little Falls run across the plate. Giovanni Almaviva followed with a single; Macri scored, but Dunn, the tying run, slipped rounding third base and scampered back to the bag ahead of a throw to avoid being the final out of the inning.

Rowe struck out the next batter to preserve a 3-2 lead.

Then the wheels came off. A soft single to center field, an infield hit, and a throwing error on a bunt quickly produced one run, and another overthrow when a Tiger stole second base allowed a second run to score. Back-to-back doubles drove in runs, the first by Rowe who had tripled and scored one inning earlier, and two walks, a sacrifice fly and yet another error followed as Taconic Hills (24-2) stretched its lead to 9-2.

The Mounties would score four runs in the sixth inning when they walked the bases loaded again and Wyatt Beadle drove in two runs with the team's second hit of the day. Jimmy Milianta singled to start the bottom of the seventh but Brandon Rossano, the third Taconic Hills pitcher retired the next three batters.

Taconic Hills plays at 1 p.m. Saturday at SUNY-Binghamton against either Section VI Medina or Section IX Spackenkill.
