AT&T, Verizon among providers with service outages overnight

AT&T, Verizon and other wireless users dealt with a significant service outage early Thursday.

Starting a little after 3 a.m. thousands of users were left without service, per the outage tracking site Downdetector. As of 9 a.m. there were still over 72,000 reports of outages.

Verizon peaked at 4,300 outages at 8 a.m. per Downdetector.

Though listed on Downdetector, a T-Mobile spokesperson said they did not experience outages.

“Our network is operating normally. Down Detector is likely reflecting challenges our customers were having attempting to connect to users on other networks,” a T-Mobile statement said.

Cricket Wireless also had over 13,000 outages.

“Some of our customers are experiencing wireless service interruptions this morning. We are working urgently to restore service to them," AT&T said in a statement to USA TODAY on Thursday morning. "We encourage the use of Wi-Fi calling until service is restored.”

AT&T was one of the top trending terms on X, formerly Twitter, Thursday morning as users lamented their loss of service.

No word yet on when service will be fully restored.

What does SOS mean?

The outages left some phones on SOS mode. It happens when there's a service outage, but the phone is still capable of calling local emergency numbers.

Many think "SOS" stands for "save our souls" or "save our ship," but it actually doesn't stand for anything. SOS is a Morse Code distress signal.
