AT&T service returning after outage hits large area of South Florida

AT&T users are reporting that their services are coming back online after a widespread phone and internet outage that affected most of South Florida this afternoon.

According to the website Downdetector.com, users began reporting having no service at about 3:30 p.m.

Shortly before 6 p.m., users in many parts of South Florida began posting in the comment section of the site that their services have returned.

In an email at about 6:30 p.m., an AT&T spokeswoman said: “Service has been restored for most wireless and wireline customers in the Miami area after an equipment failure at one of our facilities caused a service disruption. We apologize for the inconvenience.”

Outages were reported as far south as Key West and by users from Homestead, Vero Beach, Jupiter, Coral Gables, Sunny Isles Beach, Pompano Beach, Parkland and Plantation.

A user in Delray Beach said the outage affected AT&T’s fiber and DSL services. A Sunrise user said the outage also affected his U-verse TV service, and that his cellphone service was slow.

WPBF-Ch. 25, quoting a spokesperson from the Indian River Sheriff’s Office, said the problem left customers unable to call 911.
