T.L. Hanna rallies, Wren wins in playoff at boys state golf championships

Here’s a look at how Upstate high school boys golf teams fared Tuesday in the state championships.

T.L. Hanna rallies, then dominates in AAAAA

T.L. Hanna stormed back from a five-shot deficit and won by 10 shots in defending its Class AAAAA state championship.

The Yellow Jackets after Monday’s opening round at the Country Club of Lexington trailed co-leaders Dorman and Chapin. Hanna pulled away behind a 1-under-par 71 by junior Caden Osommer, who finished in fifth place among individuals. Sophomore Erik Erlenkeuser shot 72 and freshman Bennett Scaletta shot 73 to join Osommer on the all-state team. The Yellow Jackets shot 291 on Tuesday, six shots better than their opening round for a 593 total.

Dorman sophomore Will Ruth took medalist honors with a two-day total of 1-under 140 and a birdie on the third playoff hole against Chase Cline of Chapin. The Cavaliers finished third (608), Mauldin fourth (616), Spartanburg eighth(630), Gaffney ninth (631) and Boiling Springs 10th (633).

Casey Kosney (145) of Dorman and Clayton Taylor (147) of Boiling Springs made the all-state team.

Wren wins first title in playoff with Blue Ridge

In Class AAA after two days at the Hackler Course in Conway, nothing was decided between Wren and Blue Ridge.

On a second playoff hole, Wren took its first state title.

Dawson Szabo of Blue Ridge won medalist honors by three shots with a 140. He was joined on the all-state team by Wren’s Hampton Yarborough (143) and Dylan Park (143), Blue Ridge’s Owen Kinnunan (145), Chapman’s Will McCraw (151) and Powdersville’s Nate Porter (155).

D.W. Daniel’s team finished fifth (643), Powdersville eighth (653), Travelers Rest 10th (664) and Pendleton 12th (667).

Greenville, Chesnee boys golf finish among top five

In Class AAAA, Hugh Faulkner shot a two-day 147 to make all-state and lead Greenville to a fourth-place finish at the Rose Hill Golf Club in Bluffton. Eastside and Riverside finished tied for eighth at 625. Ben Sanders of Wade Hampton shot 146 to make all-state.

In AA, Chesnee finished climbed from ninth place after the first day to finish in the state championship played at Cheraw State Park. The Eagles shot 648 total. Oceanside took the title with a 579. Creighton Rentz led Chesnee with a 76 and teammate Payton Lawter shot 77.

Christ Church won its 11th consecutive Class A state championship last week with a 288 at the Hartsville Country Club. The Cavaliers beat second-place Southside Christian by 18 shots. William Jennings of Christ Church shot 65 for medalist honors. He was joined on the all-state team by Groves Williams (71), Charlie Reyner (76) and Heyward Jennings (76). Southside Christian was led by Evan Cheek (73) and third-place St. Joseph's by Den Remsberg (73).
