Is AT&T cell service down? Why is my phone on SOS? What we know

Some AT&T users around the nation weren't able to use their phones this morning, but they may have learned about a valuable service they didn't know they had on their mobile devices.

Reports of AT&T cell outages peaked this morning just after 7 a.m. on DownDetector, a site that tracks issues with various services from user reports. The number had dropped by 11 a.m., but still showed more than 200 reports of outages.

When some iPhone users connected to the AT&T network woke up, they noticed their iPhones were set to SOS.

Why was AT&T down this morning?

AT&T replied to several customer complaints on its X/Twitter feed asking them to DM the account; but the company did not post an explanation for the outages.
