The show is long over and he is long dead but Logan Roy continues to influence my sartorial decisions more than I'd like to admit. And really, why shouldn't he? The Succession paterfamilias was the OG style star of that show, in my opinion. He was the maestro of sprezzatura. He had taste. He knew who he was and what he wanted. Also, I'd like to point out that he was wearing those Loro Piana baseball caps first, before Kendall copied them, everyone else IRL took notice, and the $525 status symbols stopped signifying #IYKYK flex.

In the premiere of the final season, Logan took a walk in Central Park in a 4-pocket Ralph Lauren Purple Label field jacket, a version of which I am still on the hunt for. And a quilted men's Barbour jacket has been on my shopping list ever since I noticed Logan wearing one back in season 3, in that scene in the Hamptons with Adrien Brody’s character. In fact, I finally purchased the exact same one just a few weeks ago (PSA: it's on sale). See? He’s a timeless influencer.

Which brings me to the Pavlovian forces that inspired my latest choice of luggage. It all started last summer, when, en route to Europe for two weeks, the airline lost my Rimowa suitcase. It was never found, which apparently happens more than you know. (No, I didn't have an AirTag; yes, I have learned my lesson.) The ordeal made me vow never to check a bag again and—in following the example set by T&C editor in chief Stellene Volandes—become a carry-on only girl.

While I do have a cute little Rimowa Cabin S that's perfect for long weekend summer trips, to really commit to the carry-on life, in all seasons, I needed something more spacious. I could have sized up to a Rimowa Cabin, which is what I was about to do when something pinged from the deep recesses of my psyche. Another Succession memory: specifically, the beginning of season 3, when Logan and his Waystar consiglieri are holed up in a Sarajevo airport hotel. I remembered clocking a sleek suitcase lurking in the corner of one of those scenes. Back then I had neither the need nor the NYC closet space for another piece of luggage, but now that my circumstances had changed...

So I'll admit it was Succession snobbery (and conditioning) that made me choose this Carl Friedrik suitcase over anything else. But I promise you the quality is what has turned this from a vain purchase to a lasting staple. The Carry-On X has been an excellent travel companion. It's quite lightweight, even for a (German-engineered) polycarbonate shell; the wheels have proved worthy of harsh urban terrain, like the cobblestoned streets of Rome; nearly an inch of expansion power means I can squeeze in a few more stuffed Paravel packing cubes; and that front laptop pocket gives this model a serious edge over its competitors. But my favorite part? The butterfly TSA locks, especially for the way they close with a satisfying click. It's like I'm being rewarded each time I can get all of my things to fit.

But when I just really, really can't, I can rely on my foldable Longchamp Pliage to pick up the slack (translation: too much shopping in Paris). Plus, now I have that AirTag should baggage misfortune strike again. Of course Logan never had this problem—but alas, I’m still saving up for a PJ.
