Tom Wolfe didn’t invent tales of power and greed, but he just might have perfected them. And perhaps none of Wolfe’s novels—which all explore a certain brand of American hubris and the high cost of flying too close to the sun—depicts the downside of influence as well as 1998’s A Man in Full.

The doorstop of a novel follows Atlanta real-estate tycoon Charlie Croker, recently divorced and on the verge of bankruptcy, and tells the story of not only his tumultuous times but also those of the city around him, which is engulfed in scandal as rumors of an assault scandalize high society and stoke racial tensions simmering just beneath its serene Southern surface.

It's no wonder, then, that A Man in Full also makes for captivating TV. A small-screen adaptation of the book will make its anticipated premiere on Netflix on May 2; the series was written by David E. Kelley (who also serves as showrunner), directed by Regina King, and stars Jeff Daniels as Croker leading a starry cast including Tom Pelphrey, William Jackson Harper, Lucy Liu, Chanté Adams, and more. More than two decades after it was first published, Wolfe’s story feels as vital and timely as ever—and its adaptation proves that while times change, the stories that fascinate us rarely do.

"When we’re talking about A Man In Full, we’re talking about the fragility of the male ego," Kelley tells T&C. "Charlie’s fragile masculinity drives him to incredible lengths. We’re seeing such behavior in the real world perhaps more than ever, it’s a timeless, vital story we can all relate to in some way or another. To the extent we can expose a new audience to Tom Wolfe—whether A Man In Full or his other, numerous publications—we’re proud to be a part of that."
