Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone’s husband, Andre Levrone Jr., sprinted his way into her heart.

Although the track and field Olympian and former football player shared a mutual friend, they did not “interact” until Andre slid into her DMs. She knew he was the one days after meeting, while he was sure by their third date.

In the summer of 2021, Sydney not only took home gold from the Tokyo Olympics but also an engagement ring. Nine months after getting engaged, she and Andre exchanged vows in a romantic ceremony. At the time, the Olympic gold medalist told PEOPLE that "getting to wake up next to your best friend and tackle whatever challenges the day has is so exciting.”

Andre added that he and Sydney are what he likes to call “'co-laborers' in life.” In 2022, he told PEOPLE that “in this season of life, me primarily supporting her and her dream and her calling, is fun for me. And just knowing how supportive she is of me as well and in the long term."

Andre is a former football player

Andre was an athlete like his wife — the wide receiver had contracts with the Baltimore Ravens, Carolina Panthers and Jacksonville Jaguars. However, in 2020, the University of Virginia alum said “farewell” to football.

In a post on Instagram, he penned, “Mannnn, this is the 1st time in 20 years where the football season has rolled around & I’m not playing. Deciding to no longer pursue a professional football career was a difficult decision, but a necessary one nonetheless ... it was ALL worth it.”

Andre also wrote that he was “so grateful for the opportunity to have abided in my passion for so many years, & to have done so on every level.”

He slid into Sydney's DMs

Sydney revealed in a 2022 interview with The Knotthat Andre introduced himself by sliding into her DMs.

“We had a mutual friend who I went to high school with and he went to college with — but we didn't interact until he slid into my DMs,” she recalled. “We started off as friends.”

In her 2024 book Far Beyond Gold: Running from Fear to Faith, Sydney told the whole story.

“One day, I posted a selfie with the caption ‘Attention,’ a reference to a song I’d been listening to," she wrote, adding that she "was just being a little creative." Andre took the opportunity to message the athlete, saying, "You have my attention. How can I get yours?’’

Sydney knew Andre was the one early on

While they started off as friends, their relationship was “always very intentional.” Sydney told The Knot, “He asked me to do Bible study with him and introduced me to a group of really great people who were encouraging and very mature. It was the first time I was in a relationship with a man who I felt could lead me in my faith to a place where I wanted to be.”

The pair both “knew early on” that they liked each other and what their “intentions were.” Sydney added, “If I could say the one thing about our relationship, it's that it was always very intentional. Honestly, I knew the fourth day we ever talked. So that's something.”

He has celebrated her accomplishments

In 2021, Andre celebrated Sydney's 22nd birthday with a sweet post on Instagram that acknowledged her many accomplishments. Alongside a carousel of images and videos of the two of them, he wrote, “Yes, your 22nd year of life brought you 2 Olympic Golds, 2 world records, & a host of other accolades. However, I had a front row seat to much more than just that.”

Andre shared that he had “witnessed reconciliation, restoration, & revival” in Sydney. “YOU ARE WHAT A WOMAN SHOULD BE… & I am honored to call you my one & only. I love you eternally— HAPPY 22nd BIRTHDAY Sunflower 🌻❤️!!” he concluded.

Sydney was the first woman Andre said “I love you” to

Prior to his relationship with Sydney, Andre had never said “I love you” to another woman.

Six months before they walked down the aisle, Andre shared a romantic video on Instagram, writing: “You were the first woman that I ever said 'I love you' to ... & what a privilege it has been to love you this past year.”

In the video, he recalled, “As I told you the first time that I told you I love you, I don’t just love you now, I love you eternally.”

He and Sydney got engaged in 2021

After eight months of “living life” with Sydney, Andre proposed to the Olympic gold medalist at the Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale in August 2021. Sydney announced her engagement on Instagram with a letter to her “future husband.”

“Till this day I still can’t comprehend how someone who possesses everything I’ve prayed for, has finally come into my life. Our growth together exceeds what the dates on a calendar show. I fall in love with you more and more each day off of the strength of your faith,” she captioned photos from the engagement.

Sydney went on to describe Andre as “the most God-fearing, passionate, honest, loving, hard working, protective, and genuine man I’ve ever met.”

The sprinter opened up about the proposal in a 2022 interview with The Knot. She revealed that at the time she was in Arizona celebrating her birthday with friends, but had been “very suspicious” that Andre “was going to just pop in.”

When they got to the front desk of the hotel, Sydney was given a card that said, "I'm sorry I can't be there to celebrate with you but I have a surprise for you on the lawn." Outside was Andre waiting to pop the question.

“I honestly don't remember what we talked about,” Sydney admitted. “I kept thinking, 'don't fall, don't look ugly in these pictures.' It was so sweet and very surreal.”

Andre and Sydney had a vineyard wedding

Less than a year after getting engaged, the couple tied the knot in May 2022.

"We've been waiting for this day for a very long time so just excited that it's finally here and we can say we're married," the bride told PEOPLE. For the big day, Sydney wore a Pallas Couture dress with a veil by Vera Wang, while the groom opted for a suit by Brian Alexander.

The wedding was held at the Early Mountain Vineyards in Madison, Va. "We figured we wanted to be close enough to family in the northeast but far enough south that the weather was nice," the groom told PEOPLE. "It's a great spot."

He and Sydney attended Paris Fashion Week together in 2022

A few months after their wedding, the newlyweds attended Paris Fashion Week together for the first time. The couple made a stylish showing at the Dior Spring-Summer 2023 Show.

Sydney shared pictures from their fashionable date on Instagram, writing, “Our first time at Paris Fashion Week, and @dior set the bar high! Thank you so much for your hospitality in having us, it was truly fabulous all around.”
