Swift, Bell lead Staunton girls to season-opening win; Riverheads football tix info

STAUNTON — Sam Swift scored 14 points and Jordan Bell added 10 points as Staunton girls basketball opened its season with a 58-14 win over Mountain View Monday night.

Eight Storm players, all underclassmen, got in the scoring column as Staunton starts the season 1-0. Staunton is on the road for two more games this week, at Harrisonburg Wednesday and at Mountain View Friday.

The Buffalo Gap boys beat Bath County 41-36. Kasey Fitzgerald finished with 13 points and Blake Robertson had 12 for the Bison, who are 1-0. Gap is at Nelson Wednesday.

The Riverheads girls opened their season on the road with a 56-23 loss to Rappahannock County. Riverheads opens at home Tuesday against Mountain View before traveling to Bath County Friday.

That Riverheads game is one of two girls basketball contests Tuesday night. The other sees Fort Defiance opening at Broadway. In boys basketball Tuesday, Broadway is at Fort, Stuarts Draft is at Monticello and Riverheads is at Mountain View.

State football semifinals ticket info

Riverheads will host Poquoson Saturday in the Class 2 state football semifinals. The game is scheduled to kick off at 2 p.m.

There will be no cash sales for tickets, per the Riverheads website. Those wishing to attend can pre-purchase tickets at GoFan.co. Tickets are $10 plus $1.50 service fee and are on sale now.

There will be card readers at the ticket gate if anyone needs to purchase via credit card or debit card on Saturday. Gates open at 12:30 pm. and the school is asking fans not to try to enter the stadium before then.
