Nine people, six of whom were minors, were arrested at the Kentucky State Fair Saturday night after they allegedly caused disturbances which caused some to think shots had been fired, according to Kentucky State Police.

These disturbances caused the Kentucky State Fair to close earlier than expected Saturday after “suspicious activity” was reported to law enforcement.

Initial investigation indicated a group of individuals caused panic with noise-making devices, leading fair goers to believe shots had been fired, according to state police. As of Sunday afternoon, investigators had found no physical evidence that a gun was fired during the disruption, but the investigation remains ongoing.

State police said they would release more details once the investigation has been completed.

State police said there were no reported injuries. However, eight fair-goers were arrested by KSP the Kentucky Fair Board Police arrested one individual. Of those arrests, three were adults and six were minors. The individuals arrested all resided in Jefferson County. Charges include disorderly conduct, menacing, possession of stolen property and possession of a handgun.

According to Sherry Bray from Kentucky State Police, at 9:20 p.m., state police were made aware of an incident in front of the Midway and began to take action to secure the area.

At around 10 p.m., the Kentucky State Fair Board announced a “soft close” of the fair for the safety of guests. Based on information available, the state fair was expected to continue with normal operations Sunday.

“The Kentucky State Fair is a long-standing tradition of fun and togetherness for many families. It is unfortunate that a few individuals and poor decisions disrupted that,” the Kentucky State Fair said in a statement released on its website.

“While we are not able to provide details on the police investigation, we are thankful no one was injured and appreciate the Kentucky State Police and our Fair Team members who quickly responded to this incident.”
