Suspected gas leak at Louisiana hotel turns out to be guest storing gas in room

Firefighters responding to a suspected gas leak at a Louisiana hotel were surprised to find a guest storing gasoline in their room.

The St. Tammany Fire District said it was raced to the Residence Inn in Covington, near Lake Pontchartrain in the eastern part of the state, Thursday morning after staff and guests reported the smell of gasoline.

The firefighters found two gas cans being stored in one of the rooms.

On Facebook, the department warned people against storing gasoline indoors.

“We urge everyone to practice safety when storing gasoline! Please do not store gas inside, gas must be stored in a well ventilated area and in proper containers.”

After a cyber attack took the Colonial Pipeline offline for several days, shortages were caused by people panic buying gasoline. The southeast U.S. was especially affected, leading the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission to advise people against improperly storing gasoline in plastic bags after viral photos on social media showed multiple people filling plastic shopping and garbage bags with fuel.
