Officers say a woman was driving while intoxicated and caused multiple collisions and major injuries to a 2-year-old among others in Fresno on Friday, the California Highway Patrol said.

A 30-year-old Lancaster woman, Jalessa Johnson, was driving at a high rate of speed about 4:50 a.m. on Highway 180 while traveling east just east of Chestnut Avenue before the crash, CHP said.

Because she was intoxicated, according to CHP, she was not able to stop her 2006 Chrysler 300 when the 2002 Toyota Tacoma in front of her slowed, CHP said.

The Chrysler struck the rear of the Toyota and several more crashes occurred as the vehicles blocked the roadway, according to CHP.

Johnson and a 2-year-old in her car suffered major injuries and were taken to Community Regional Medical Center, CHP said. The girl was in a car seat but officers said it was not fitted properly.

A 34-year-old Fresno man riding in the Chrysler was also taken to the hospital and his injuries were described as moderate by the CHP.

The two Sanger women in the Toyota — one 70 and the other 78 — did not report injuries, officers said.

Johnson was arrested on suspicion of DUI, CHP said.
