Suspect from stabbing incident at bar charged for weapon possession

A man arrested following a stabbing at a local bar was arraigned Friday.

Anthony Griggs, 41, was charged with carrying a dangerous weapon with unlawful intent after he was arrested on Electric Avenue on April 16.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Griggs admitted to stabbing the other man, but said he was acting in self defense after the two got into a fight.

The affidavit states Griggs was kicked out of City Limits Tavern after he started an argument. Two men followed him out and Griggs reportedly attempted to punch one of them, but missed. One of the two men said they punched Griggs in the face before returning to the bar.

Later, another customer said Griggs appeared to be messing with motorcycles parked in front of the bar; it's unclear who the motorcycles belonged to from the report. A witness told Port Huron Police one of the bar patrons began struggling with Griggs on the ground. The two broke off and the patron said he had been stabbed.

The felony against Griggs indicates he's being charged for possession of the weapon rather than the stabbing itself. However, a habitual offender-fourth offense enhancement was attached to his case, increasing his potential penalty from five years in prison to up to a life sentence.

Griggs is being held in the St. Clair County jail on a $75,000 bond. A probable cause conference is scheduled for 9 a.m. April 30. A lawyer was not listed for Griggs as of press time.
