Suspect charged with shooting teen in head in downtown Athens

Athens-Clarke police arrested a suspect Thursday in a shooting in downtown Athens that left a teenager with a severe head wound.

Police reported Friday that the shooting occurred about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday near the Broad Street and Pulaski Street intersection.

A 17-year-old Athens teenager, whose name was not released, was shot in the head. He remained Friday in the hospital, police said.

The suspect fired a gun from a car, but police spokesman Lt. Jody Thompson said Friday the reason is unclear, but investigators are still piecing together what happened.

Thompson said police detectives identified the vehicle through downtown surveillance cameras and this led to the arrest of the suspect, Quavarez Marquel Sanders, 20, of Weir Circle, Athens.

Sanders is charged with aggravated battery and two counts of aggravated assault. He remains in jail without bond.
