Suspect arrested for pistol-whipping Bronx postal worker in caught-on-video $100K September heist

A suspect has been arrested for pistol-whipping a Bronx postal worker during a daring caught-on-video heist last month that netted $100,000 in cash and money orders, officials said Tuesday.

Elhorin Yisreal is accused of holding up the worker and her husband outside the Castle Hill Ave. branch around 7 a.m. on Sept. 6, federal prosecutors said.

Yisreal, 44, is charged with a Hobbs Act robbery and brandishing a firearm.

The Hobbs Act applies to federal crimes affecting interstate commerce. Yisreal could face up to life in prison if convicted.

He allegedly ran up to the employee just after her husband dropped her off at the branch.

The crook, who had been sitting in a parked white Honda Odyssey minivan outside the post office for about two hours before the heist, pistol-whipped the woman and ordered her to open the post office and then the safe inside, cops said. The branch was not scheduled to open until 8 a.m.

When the postal employee’s husband saw what was happening, he ran back over and the crook pulled both of them inside at gunpoint, according to a nearby deli worker, who caught the robbery on his surveillance camera.

“The guy pulled out a gun and put it to her head,” said the deli worker, who would only identify himself as Mohammed. “The husband sees that and he ran back to the door. The robber opened the door and dragged them in.”

“You want to be a hero? You and her go both,” the robber told the husband, according to an account Mohammed heard from cops.

Once inside, the bandit ordered the postal employee to open the safe. He fled the post office with the cash, 10 boxes of blank money orders and a printer used to print money orders, federal officials said.

The employee was treated at the scene. Her husband wasn’t hurt.

Federal investigators nabbed Yisreal on Friday.

“Elhorin Yisreal brazenly robbed a Bronx post office in broad daylight, endangering the lives of a post office employee and her husband in the process,” U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said. “Yisreal’s alleged actions show his disregard for the rule of law.”
