Survival of the Thickest Renewed for Season 2 at Netflix

Survival of the Thickest will live to slay another day.

The vivacious Netflix comedy from Michelle Buteau and co-creator Danielle Sanchez-Witzel (New Girl, My Name Is Earl) has been renewed for Season 2, TVLine has learned.

Buteau has also secured a second Netflix stand-up special after 2020’s Michelle Buteau: Welcome to Buteaupia.

Survival of the Thickest follows Mavis Beaumont (played by Buteau), a Black, plus sized and newly single New York woman who “unexpectedly finds herself having to rebuild her life as a struggling stylist,” per the official synopsis. “She’s determined to not only survive but thrive with the support of her chosen family, a body positive attitude, and a cute v-neck with some lip gloss.”

The story is adapted from the actress/comedian’s book of essays, first published by Simon & Schuster in Dec. 2020.

The half-hour series also stars Tone Bell (Truth Be Told, Whitney) as Mavis’ commitment-challenged best friend Khalil and Tasha Smith (First Wives Club, For Better or Worse) as her close confidant Marley, a divorcée exploring her sexuality.

Season 1 guest stars included Garcelle Beauvais (The Other Black Girl, Real Housewives of Beverly Hills), Taylor Selé (Queens), Marouane Zotti (I May Destroy You), Peppermint (Harlem, RuPaul’s Drag Race) and Rupaul’s Drag Race judge Michelle Visage.
