American Auto has been cancelled by NBC after two seasons, it has been confirmed.

The sitcom about a CEO who joins the motoring industry despite knowing nothing about it premiered at the end of 2021. Season 2 aired earlier this year and featured cameos from Ryan Reynolds, late-night host Seth Meyers and Modern Family's Eric Stonestreet.

Deadline reports that NBC axed the show after viewers dropped by 15% in total and 40% for the demographic compared to season 1, performing behind two of the network's other sitcoms. It did do better than Dwayne Johnson's Young Rock, which has also recently been cancelled following its third season.

Lead actress Ana Gaseyer tweeted about the cancellation, writing: "I really loved this opportunity - everyone on the creative team, the writers, the crew and of course, the ensemble made magic. Lucky me."

Creator Justin Spitzer, who also created Superstore and worked on The Office US for years, responded to the news, revealing a little bit about what could have been.

"Season 3 of #americanauto was going to show Katherine Hastings and Payne Motors finally finding success and taking the world by storm. I’m so sorry we didn't get to make those episodes, but I'm immensely proud of the 23 episodes of the show we did put out there," he tweeted.

"Thank you so much to our outstanding cast, writers, crew, and fans. Lemme know if anyone wants to buy a Pika."

Season 2 also saw Sadie Ryan (Harriet Dyer) relax her policy of never dating a co-worker a little bit, by agreeing to go for a drink with Jack Fortin (Tye White), so it's likely that season 3 would have explored their potential romance.

American Auto aired on NBC in the United States. and can be streamed on Sky Go and NOW in the United Kingdom.
