The CW has confirmed Superman & Lois will return for a fourth season, which will comprise just ten episodes.

Network president Brad Schwartz confirmed the show's renewal in a statement to TVLine while additionally confirming a third season for fellow CW series All American: Homecoming.

"We are thrilled to bring Superman & Lois back to The CW," he said. "These series are two of our strongest performers across our linear and digital platforms with some of the most passionate fanbases in all of television.

"We are grateful to our partners at Warner Bros. Television and Berlanti Productions for their continued collaboration, and we cannot wait to get started on the new seasons."

While fans will no doubt be pleased to learn of another outing for Lois and Clark, a shorter season may come as somewhat of a blow.

Seasons one and two of the superhero series were made up of 15 episodes, whilst Superman & Lois season three featured 13 episodes in total.

Superman & Lois season four has been given the green light ahead of season three's finale, which is scheduled to air on US screens in late June.

Viewers will see Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) go head-to-head with iconic nemesis Lex Luthor (played by The Walking Dead's Michael Cudlitz) in the penultimate episode of season 3.

Schwartz recently teased a "great" ending to Superman & Lois' third season, highlighting the infamous villain's appearance.

"You've got some Lex Luthor in there," he said. "I don't want to give any spoilers, but the end of the season is great — and it’s got a bit of a cliffhanger."

The Lex Luthor storyline isn't the only one rocking audiences in season three. A tragic twist was unveiled in a recent Superman & Lois episode, with viewers learning of Lois's stage three inflammatory breast cancer diagnosis. Lois was given the news upon learning that she is pregnant.

Elizabeth Tulloch, who plays Lois, said of the storyline: "It's very scary for Clark, who's not used to being afraid of anything, having to deal with this. I would say this brings them a lot closer."

Superman & Lois airs on The CW in the US, and on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the UK.
