Sumner Tunnel, key to getting to Logan, to close in July. Here's what you need to know

Be aware Massachusetts drivers, this summer the Sumner Tunnel – i.e. the most common way to get to Boston Logan International Airport and a key roadway for commuters – is slated to close for a month.

Sumner Tunnel will be closed from July 5 to August 5 to resume crucial repairs, according to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation. The closure is a month shorter than the previous estimate.

Drivers should also expect weekend closures a month before and a month after the scheduled construction closure of the tunnel, MassDOT said.

How to get to Logan Airport when Sumner Tunnel is closed

MassDOT recommends people going to Logan Airport arrive there via the Blue Line or Silver Line, the Logan Express, the Logan Water Taxi or the Hingham/Hull Ferry instead.

If that's not an option, drivers who are leaving Logan Airport and wanting to get to Downtown Boston will be rerouted to I-90/Ted Williams Tunnel and onto I-93.

Drivers departing Logan Airport wanting to get on I-93 North should:

  • Follow signs for Route 1A North to Bell Circle Rotary.

  • Follow signs to Route 16 to Route 1 south.

  • Go over the Route 1/Tobin Bridge and follow signs to Rutherford Avenue.

  • Pass through Sullivan Square and onto I-93 North.

Why is the Sumner Tunnel closing?

The Sumner Tunnel is being restored.

"The Sumner Tunnel is undergoing a restoration that began in the spring of 2022. This work requires the tunnel to be closed to traffic periodically," MassDOT said.

The work being done during this closure includes work on the tunnel ceiling, roadway, walls, lighting, and additional improvements which will increase safety and climate resiliency, according to MassDOT. The work is part of a $160 million project.
