Sumner fire forces change in Friday’s high school homecoming parade route

City of Sumner

An early morning fire in downtown Sumner is forcing the rerouting of Sumner High School’s homecoming parade Friday evening.

Crews were still working hot spots at the three alarm fire late Friday morning, making the likelihood of the street opening by evening to both vehicle and pedestrian traffic remote.

The city of Sumner tweeted Friday morning that Main Street is closed between Traffic Avenue and Wood Avenue.

Now, parade participants will assemble on Maple Street and Ryan Avenue. The parade itself, which begins at 4:30 p.m., will start on Wood Avenue at Maple Street and head north to Main Street before turning east.

The parade, which includes bands, football players, homecoming royalty and participants from other Sumner schools, travels to the high school at 1707 Main St.

“It’s quite the tradition so we’re glad it’s continuing,” said Elle Warmuth, spokesperson for the Sumner-Bonney Lake School District.
