Suicide Squad star Joel Kinnaman's new action movie has received its bloody first trailer.

From director John Woo and the producer of John Wick, the new action thriller Silent Night is set for release on December 1.

Described as a "gritty revenge tale", the film sees Kinnaman play a tormented father who witnesses his young son's death after being caught in a gang's crossfire on Christmas Eve.

"While recovering from a wound that costs him his voice, he makes vengeance his life's mission and embarks on a punishing training regimen in order to avenge his son's death. Full of Woo's signature style, Silent Night redefines the action genre with visceral, thrill-a-minute storytelling," reads the official logline.

This isn't any ordinary revenge thriller, though. Woo's movie features almost no dialogue after Kinnaman's character is shot in the throat at the start of the film — hence its title.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly about making a story without dialogue, Woo, who directed the 1997 classic Face/Off, said it was a "challenge".

"It was a very smart script and the story really touched me [because] I have three children," Woo said.

"The biggest challenge is how do you make the audience accept a story without dialogue, and get them moved by the story, let them understand they're not missing something."

Speaking of Kinnaman's transformation throughout the movie as his character prepares to confront his son's killer, Woo said the actor "was very in the character. He was always pushing himself so hard to work out".

"He tried [to give] a real performance but only with his eyes, his eyes have so many stories and so many emotions. I was so happy to work with him," he added.

Starring alongside Kinnaman in the Christmas action flick is Scott Mescudi, aka Kid Cudi, who will play a cop, as well as Catalina Sandino Moreno and Harold Torres.

Silent Night will be released on December 1.
