Suicide car bomber kills 4 people, wounds dozens in Afghanistan: officials

A suicide car bomber killed at least four people and wounded about 40 others in an attack on a police base near Kandahar, Afghanistan’s second-largest city, local officials said Monday.

The blast in the southern Maiwand district destroyed several homes and left soldiers and civilians hurt late Sunday night, said Mohammad Ashraf Nadery, director of the local health department. Emergency crews were still searching the rubble for additional victims Monday, he told The Associated Press.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the explosion, but the location of the attack suggests the Taliban may be involved. The group has had a large presence in Kandahar since the U.S. led an invasion of the country following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

The war-torn country has seen a surge of violence this year even as the Taliban holds peace talks with government negotiators.

The latest blast comes just a week after gunmen opened fire inside Kabul University, the country’s largest, leaving more than 20 people dead and at least 22 wounded. ISIS, which claimed responsibility for the attack hours later, said it targeted newly graduated “judges and investigators belonging to the apostate Afghan government.”

There was no further information Monday morning about the victims in the Maiwand car bomb.

The district is part of Kandahar province and sits about 40 miles west of the city of Kandahar.
