May the back-stabbing begin. One of HBO Max's most dysfunctional families is back in business as Succession season 4 nears.

At the end of Succession season 3, it seemed like the scales finally tipped in Kendall Roy (Jeremy Strong)'s favor. His siblings Roman (Kieran Culkin) and Shiv (Sarah Snook) banded together in a bid to stop the Waystar Royco merger with Lukas Mattson (Alexander Skarsgård)'s GoJo. But, Kendall's coup to knock their patriarch failed after Shiv’s husband Tom (Matthew Macfadyen) tipped Logan off, thus effectively cutting the trio from their shares.

Boasting 13 Emmy Awards, Succession has quite the hype behind it, with fans wondering what's ahead. So, here's all that we know about Succession season 4, including the release date, cast, trailer and more.

What is the Succession season 4 release date?

Spring 2023, according to the official Succession season 4 trailer teaser. Production began in June 2022, and the cast was spotted filming scenes on the streets of New York City in January 2023. While we wait for a more specific release date, check back here as we update this page.

Is Succession season 4 the last?

In February, creator Jesse Armstrong broke fans hearts by confirming to The New Yorker that season 4 will be the last folks see of the Roy family. As for his reason behind the show's ending, he revealed that it had been in the works for some time.

"It’s been a bit tortured, and I felt unexpectedly nervous about talking to you," he told the outlet. "You know, there’s a promise in the title of Succession. I’ve never thought this could go on forever. The end has always been kind of present in my mind. From Season 2, I’ve been trying to think: 'Is it the next one, or the one after that, or is it the one after that?'"

He continued: "I got together with a few of my fellow-writers before we started the writing of Season 4, in about November, December, 2021, and I sort of said, "Look, I think this maybe should be it. But what do you think?" ... We could do a couple of short seasons, or two more seasons. Or we could go on for ages and turn the show into something rather different, and be a more rangy, freewheeling kind of fun show, where there would be good weeks and bad weeks. Or we could do something a bit more muscular and complete, and go out sort of strong."

Who is in the Succession season 4 cast?

All the cards are on the table. Succession fans can expect "the rebel alliance," as Connor Roy (Alan Ruck) refers to them, in the trenches of it all. That includes Jeremy Strong, Kieran Culkin and Sarah Snook. As for those other pieces on the chessboard, here's who else is confirmed for season 4:

  • Jeremy Strong as Kendall Roy

  • Sarah Snook as Shiv Roy

  • Kieran Culkin as Roman Roy

  • Alan Ruck as Connor Roy

  • Matthew Macfadyen as Tom Wambsgans

Tacking on one more episode than last season, Succession season 4 will span 10 episodes. It'll follow the ongoing familial division among the Roys as the prospect of the Waystar Royco deal prompts "existential angst" and of course, a "power struggle," according to HBO Max's description.

If there's anything to know about Succession, it's that no alliance is permanent. Per Deadline, showrunner Jesse hinted that Tom may come to regret his risky move as Logan isn’t one to trust. "This is bad, but it’s not smart for me to speculate about the stuff that will be turned into subsequent episodes. I don’t know," he said about a possible divorce between Tom and Shiv.

He also spoke to IndieWire about Greg's decision to side with Tom in the finale and how that may factor in his character development. "I think we’ve seen that Greg is not uninterested in wielding power and gaining capital. It’s just that he’s had quite small amounts of it in the past," he told the outlet. So, maybe Cousin Greg will step into his villain era next season ...

What's more, the season 4 teaser gave a narrow glimpse into the mounting tension between the Roys. "Everything I try to do, people turn against me," Kendall says at the start of the video. Like much of the cast, Jeremy has kept tight-lipped about season 4 details. However, the Armageddon Time actor told Entertainment Tonight that his character won't be handling the fallout too well.

"I'm in some fresh hell, as you can imagine," he told the outlet. "I can't really tell you anything. HBO would take me to a secret prison somehow."
