Sturgis tennis plays to first in Saturday quad

STURGIS — The Sturgis tennis team took first place on Saturday as the host of a quad matchup.

The tournament was named after longtime SHS tennis coach Budd Munson and saw the Trojans pile up 20 points. Stevensville-Lakeshore came in second with 16 followed by Williamston with eight and Battle Creek Central with two.

Sturgis finished the day with six flights finishing in first place. Both second singles and fourth singles came in first for the Trojans while second, third, fourth and fifth doubles also took first place on the day.

The Trojans took care of business against Battle Creek Central, winning all nine flights in straight sets. Rylee Carver won at first singles over Bonnie Ferazzi by default after leading 5-0 in the first set. Gracie Perry beat Dynise Anderson 6-0, 6-3 at second singles and Katherine Steele picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win over Ava Einhardt. Ava Stewart won her match at 6-1 and 6-0 for fourth singles.

In doubles action, the Sturgis team of Chloe Clark and Arianna Terwedo in the first flight won their match 6-1 and 6-2. Second doubles saw Johanna Rooyakkers and Bella Currier pick up a 6-0, 6-2 win while Nghi Ngo and Katelyn Halling won comfortably 6-0, 6-0. Mya Eicher and Hannah Ritchie won their match at fourth doubles by scores of 6-0, 6-1 and fifth doubles saw Leigh Eells and Lilly Whitehead win 6-0, 6-0.

Sturgis beat Lakeshore by a 7-2 score. Carver and Steele each fell in their matches. Perry won hers 6-2, 6-2 and Stewart picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win at fourth singles.

Clark and Terwedo won in the tiebreaker 10-3 after splitting the first two sets. Rooyakkers and Currier cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win while Ngo and Halling won 6-2, 6-4. At fourth doubles, Eicher and Ritchie won 6-4, 6-1. Fifth doubles saw Layla Mead and Gracie Golden win at 6-1, 6-0.

Sturgis picked up a 6-2 victory over Williamston. Carver fell 10-8 in the tiebreaker after splitting the first two sets while first doubles also dropped a tough match.

Perry won 6-4, 6-3 at second singles and Steele picked up a 6-1, 6-3 win. Stewart played to 6-2, 6-2 wins at fourth singles. In doubles action, the second team of Rooyakkers and Currier won 6-2, 6-2 while Ngo and Halling won 6-1, 6-0. The fourth doubles team of Eicher and Ritchie won the tiebreaker, 10-6, after splitting the opening two sets of the match.
