Sturgis tennis has had a busy few weeks

STURGIS — The Sturgis tennis team has been busy recently, playing several close matches over that span.

On Wednesday, the Lady Trojans got the best of Edwardsburg in a 5-3 decision.

Sturgis won three of the four singles matches on the day. Rylee Carver picked up a win in her match at No. 1 singles, she won 6-1 in the opening set but the second set was not completed at Leah Stern retired.

Gracie Perry won at second singles, beating Julia Jones 6-1, 6-0 while Katherine Steele won her match with identical 6-4 scores. Dropping a close one was Ava Stewart at fourth singles, 6-4 and 6-4.

Sturgis won a match at third doubles. There, Nghi Ngo and Katelyn Halling picked up a 6-2, 6-2 victory for the Trojans.

Johanna Rooyakkers and Bella Currier were upended 6-2, 6-2 at first doubles. Arianna Terwedo and Chloe Clark dropped a 7-5, 6-1 decision at second doubles while Mya Eicher and Hannah Ritchie fell in three sets at 4-6, 6-3 and 10-4.

The Trojans dropped a 5-2 decision to Parma Western on Tuesday.

Carver and Perry teamed up to win 6-1, 6-0 in an Australian doubles match as first and second singles were combined. Sturgis also picked up a win at third doubles, there Nghi Ngo and Katelyn Halling played to a 6-3, 6-2 win.

Last week, the Trojans dropped a lose 5-3 decision to Otsego.

Steele won her match in third-singles play, so did Stewart at fourth singles. Earning a victory in doubles action was the third team. Ngo and Halling won in three sets, dropping the first 5-7 but rebounding to win the next two at 6-4 and 6-2. The JV team won all four of its matches. Leigh Eells and Lilly Whitehead earned a 7-5, 6-0 win at first doubles, Lauren Whitehead and Kylie Stevens won 6-1, 6-1 at second doubles while Natalie Randall and Marlee Smith won 8-0 at third doubles. Stella Barry and Mikayla Wickey's win at fourth doubles came at 8-2.

Sturgis also dropped a 5-3 decision to Vicksburg last week.

Carver won her match at first singles, it was a three-set score at 6-4, 1-6 and 7-5. Also earning victories on the day were the team of Ngo and Halling at third doubles (6-1, 7-5) and Eicher/Ritchie at fourth doubles (7-6, 6-4).

The JV team beat Vicksburg, 6-4. Eels won a pair of matches while Natalie Randall won a singles match as well. Randall and Bailey Cates won at first doubles, Lauren Whitehead and Stevens won a doubles match. Lilly Whitehead also won a singles match.
