Sturgis baseball drops two to Paw Paw

STURGIS - The Paw Paw baseball team won a pair of games over Sturgis on Tuesday.

The Trojans fell 16-1 and 6-4 on the evening.

"The first game got out of hand right away in the first inning and unfortunately we didn't have a response for those runs," Sturgis skipper Drew Rutenbar said. "I was pleased with how we came out in Game 2. We had to battle back a few times and it was nice to see the fight in the boys."

The first game was a tough one for the Trojans. Paw Paw scored eight times in the first, plus three in the second and five in the fourth.

Sturgis got a base hit each from Taner Patrick and Julien Lambright.

The second game saw Sturgis have a better time at the plate. The Trojans took a 2-0 lead after one, but Paw Paw came back to take a 4-2 edge after five.

Sturgis then got a 2-run homer from Logan Markey in the sixth to tie the game. Unfortunately, Paw Paw scored twice in the seventh to secure the win.

Zach Green hit a double, Lambright added a hit as well for Sturgis. Gibson Cary notched two hits and drove in one.

Cary also struck out 14 batters on the mound. He tossed 6 2/3 innings.

"Gibson had another great night on the mound, we're just struggling to give the offensive support to get us the win," Rutenbar said."

Mendon picks up first win

The Mendon baseball team beat Bellevue 15-0 to win its first game of the season on Tuesday. The Hornets are now 1-2.

Brayden Crites struck out eight batters in three innings of work to pick up the win. He allowed just one hit.

Mendon scored twice in the first, nine times in the second and four times in the third.

Crites doubled twice, singled and drove in three runs at the dish. Jackson Kindig also doubled twice, added a single and drove in three runs while Jerry Batten drove in five total runs with a pair of hits.

Cam Bingaman singled in one while both Grant Crotser and Xavior Zinsmaster connected for a base hit.

Bronson takes two from Reading

The Bronson baseball team evened its record at 5-5 on the season with a sweep of Reading on Tuesday.

The Vikings won 18-2 and 9-4.

"Happy to get two tonight," Bronson coach Matt Watkins said. "Struggled in Game 2, but the boys never gave up and we were able to pull it out."

The opener saw Seth Withington toss four innings and strike out nine to get the win.

At the plate, Carson Stevens logged four hits and drove in five runs.

Owen Kimmons, Warner Wotta and Withington each had two hits and collectively drove in five.

James Jourdan and Matt Arver both had RBI doubles. Landyn Watkins and Logan Long both had a run-scoring hit.

Stevens picked up the win in the second game, striking out four.

Spencer Losinski had a 2-run hit while Kimmons, Stevens and Kestin Goodman each had a run-scoring hit. Dawson Soergel and Max Byler both collected one hit.

Niles sweeps Three Rivers

Niles beat Three Rivers 6-5 and 7-1 in a double header on Tuesday.

The Cats got two hits from Drew McClain in the first game. Luis Warmack, Kaleb Williams, Mason Awe and Carson Beuter each had one hit.

Williams tossed six innings, striking out three.

Brady Penny and Jace Gray each had one hit for the Cats in the second game.

Centreville sweeps Decatur

The Centreville baseball team beat Decatur twice on Monday, 13-1 and 10-6.

Vinny Jines, Bo Riley and Ben Truckenmiller each had two hits in the opener while Kobe Carpenter, Matt Swanwick and Jack Bartelt each had one hit.

Cash Dentler was credited with three RBIs. Tristan Smeltzer and Evan Blair both had an RBI as well.

Smeltzer picked up the win, tossing five innings while striking out three.

Centreville scored five times to lead 10-3 heading into the bottom of the sixth in the second game. Then, Decatur plated three but it was not enough.

Swanwick drove in four runs on a pair of base hits while Jines added two hits and two RBIs. Truckenmiller, Bartelt and Peyton Schuring-Harris each had a hit.

Truckenmiller, Carpenter and Swanwick combined to strike out seven.

Marcellus sweeps White Pigeon

Marcellus beat White Pigeon 17-5 and 11-4 on Monday.

Dace Kochel, Bristol Ultz and Zach Sowards-Hack each had a hit for the Chiefs in the first game.

Marcelus got three hits and three RBIs from Cale Hackenberg. Brock Buck and Dawsen Lehew each had two hits and combined to drive in four. Abram Coffey also had two hits and drove in two.

Coffey struck out 10 to get the win for the Wildcats.

In the second, Chris Temple, Kochel and Devin Schaffer each had a hit for White Pigeon. Ultz had two singles.

Coffey had two hits in the second game for Marcellus. Cole Thornburgh and Nathan Mihills each had an RBI hit while Buck, Lehew, Matthew Lehew and Brock McWilliams each had a hit.

Dawsen Lehew combined to strike out 11.

Colon beats Burr Oak

The Burr Oak baseball team fell 22-0 to Colon on Monday.

Ayden Delp drove in eight runs on four hits for the Magi, Dominick Mock had three hits and two RBIs as well. Maverick Downs drove in two, Carter Persons drove in three and Brayton Thurston had two RBIs as well. Kaleb Bissett and Dane Borgert also had a base hit.

For the Bobcats, both Austin Cole and Joshua Greene had a base hit.

Downs picked up the win for the Magi, striking out four.
