Students’ plans change after power outage hits Richland County elementary school

Plans changed for students at an elementary school in Columbia following a power outage.

Monday is now an e-learning day for L.W. Conder Elementary School students, Richland 2 officials said.

A major electrical line was cut over the weekend while contractors were working at the school on Hunt Club Road, officials said in a news release. That’s in the area between Richland Northeast High School and the junction of Interstate 20 and Interstate 77.

Dominion Energy told school officials that repairs won’t be complete until sometime Monday afternoon — at the earliest — according to the release.

As a result, students and employees won’t report to school and Monday will be an e-learning day, officials said.

Despite the loss of power, the school won’t be completely closed.

It will be open from 7-9 a.m. for teachers and students who need to pick up devices or other supplies, according to the release. Additionally, bag lunches will be available for pick from the school’s cafeteria from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

“We apologize for the late notice. However, we just learned that the situation could not be resolved before school (Monday),” officials said in the release.
