Students continue to achieve as year comes to a close. Vote for the Student of the Week

Seniors at high schools across Rhode Island are preparing to wrap up their secondary education careers but that hasn't stopped them or their classmates from continuing to achieve.

Below you will find the nominations for The Providence Journal's Student of the Week initiative and it's time for you to pick the best of the best.

Voting is open until noon on Thursday, May 30.

High schools across the state have been asked to submit nominations and a new round of nominees and voting will be made available every Monday and close the following Thursday.

Participating Rhode Island high school principals, teachers and guidance counselors nominated students they say have shown outstanding academic and school achievement and community service.

We will announce a winner Friday on providencejournal.com and in print in the Sunday Providence Journal.

Take a look at this week's nominees and cast your ballot below.

Nyima Goncalves, East Providence High School

Nyima is a joy to know. She walks in every morning with a smile, treating her peers and teachers with respect and compassion. She is dedicated to her studies with nearly straight A's. In Graphic Novel, she contributes to discussion often, inspiring others to join in. After reading March by John Lewis, students were assigned a project in which they create their own social movements. Ny designed a movement to improve foster home stability and safety for children. She goes above and beyond expectations on every assignment, utilizing feedback to succeed. Ny is one in a million.

Simon Travis, South Kingstown High School

Simon Travis is an exceptional student and person, who uses "joy as his shield" a phrase expressed in his college essay. Simon, however, gives so much joy to those around him. Taking on collecting and organizing our school’s free Clothing Closet as his senior project, Simon has taken this worthy cause further in partnering with the University of Rhode Island’s Panhellenic and Interfraternity Councils to extend this philanthropic effort beyond our high school. Moreover, Simon is an active member of numerous clubs and organizations that give voice to our students including The Literary Journal and GSA. Simon truly embodies the spirit of South Kingstown High School.
