Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, based on the acclaimed work of nonfiction by David Grann, has enjoyed a well-decorated awards-season route to the Oscars. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone, and Robert De Niro, the story covers a series of murders committed against the Osage tribe as predatory prospectors moved in on the rights to Oklahoma oil fields in the 1920s. For her role as Mollie Burkhart, Gladstone picked up a Best Actress win at the Golden Globes, and made history as the first Indigenous Best Actress Nominee for the Academy Awards. Hers is one of the film’s 10 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Directing, Supporting Actor, and more.
The Killers of the Flower Moon script and production were very informed by the Osage tribe, while the book itself focused more on the investigation around the murders. Of the film’s initial adapted script, DiCaprio told Deadline,“It just didn’t get to the heart of the Osage. It felt too much like an investigation into detective work, rather than understanding from a forensic perspective the culture and the dynamics of this very tumultuous, dangerous time in Oklahoma.”
He went on, “We were shooting there during the 100th anniversary of the Tulsa massacre, which was a half-hour car ride away from where the Osage reign of terror occurred and happened in the same year, 1921, as the first Osage murder. We were there for the Tulsa massacre and the return of the Flower Moon. It was cosmic insane coincidence that we were telling this story, 100 years later.”
