Skyline guard Trey Crandall, a three-star cornerback who signed with Colorado State football during the early period in December, scored the first and final baskets of the Spartans’ thrilling 60-59 overtime victory over Davis on Wednesday morning. Crandall’s driving layup moments into the contest was the first hoop scored on the boys court in the Tacoma Dome this winter. About 95 minutes later, when the Spartans were trailing by one point in the closing seconds of overtime, Crandall secured an in-bounds pass and pulled up for a short jumper. The shot fell through the net with 3.1 seconds to play to send Skyline on to Thursday’s quarterfinals. The win is Skyline’s first in the state tournament since 2010.

There were two upsets in the opening round in this bracket — and both were by double digits. After posting a 30-point victory in last weekend’s regional round, Bellarmine Prep made another statement in the first 4A girls game at the Tacoma Dome on Wednesday afternoon with a 63-53 win over higher-seeded Davis. Lions guard Kiara Stone poured in a game-high 34 points — the most scored by any player in any of the four tournaments on Day 1 — and added five rebounds, two assists and four steals in the victory. Guard Keiara Curtis added 10 points, three assists and three takeaways. Two games later, Gonzaga Prep posted a 64-55 upset win over Bellarmine’s 4A SPSL North rival Sumner, which was last season’s 4A state runner-up. Guard Taliah Lee scored a team-high 19 points for the Bullpups, and added six rebounds, six assists, two blocked shots and four steals in the victory. Forward Gillian Bears completed a double-double with 18 points, 10 rebounds and a pair of blocks.

DID YOU KNOW?

The 4A girls tournament is the only tournament in the Tacoma Dome this winter in which seed Nos. 1 and 2 will play each other in the quarterfinals. Woodinville, the defending state champion and this tournament’s top seed, was stunned by No. 8 Emerald Ridge in the regional round last week, sending the Falcons to a loser-out game in the opening round in Tacoma. Woodinville rallied with a 55-46 win over No. 9 Richland in the final game of the evening on the girls court Wednesday — paced by a game-high 17 points and nine rebounds from Jaecy Eggers and a double-double from Lyla Kahrimanovic, who had 13 points and 12 boards — but now turns around to play No. 2 Camas in Thursday night’s quarterfinals. That game is set for 9 p.m. The only other game in any of the 12 tournaments statewide in which the top two seeds will play each other this early is in the 1A boys bracket. No. 2 Zillah and No. 1 Lynden Christian meet in the quarterfinals Thursday evening in Yakima.

UPSET ALERT

In the second overtime game on the boys court Wednesday, Bellevue overcame a deficit that was as high as 14 points in the second half to stun Timberline in the opening round. Wolverines guard Brady Kageyama led a balanced scoring effort with 12 points. Ten Bellevue players scored in the victory. Bellevue also held UNLV-bound guard Brooklyn Hicks — who departs Timberline with the school’s records for single-game, single-season and career points, as well as the Thurston County career mark — to 17. Hicks scored 761 points this season, averaging 30.4 per game. There will be no Rainier Beach vs. Garfield rivalry matchup in the Tacoma Dome this winter. Shorecrest — which has now won three consecutive loser-out games against No. 17 Stadium, No. 9 Gig Harbor and the No. 8 Vikings in the span of nine days — played spoiler to a possible quarterfinals meeting of the two 3A Metro League powers by upsetting Rainier Beach, 69-44, in the opening round Wednesday night to conclude the first day at the Tacoma Dome. Shorecrest led by as many as 28 points in the second half to run away from the Vikings, paced by Parker Baumann, who completed a double-double with 20 points and 15 rebounds, and Keaine Silimon, who added 15 points. The Highlanders also handed a storied Rainier Beach program its biggest margin of defeat in a state tournament game since a 27-point loss to O’Dea in 1991. Shorecrest is the lowest remaining seed in the Tacoma Dome, and one of only two No. 16 seeds still playing statewide. No. 16 Orcas Island also advanced to the quarterfinals in the 1B boys bracket following an upset win over No. 8 Oakville on Wednesday night in Spokane.

Guards Luvens Valcin (17 points, 11 rebounds) and Tyrell Nichols (15 points, 11 rebounds) both tallied double-doubles in the win. Curtis, the defending 4A boys champion and top seed in that bracket, earned a bye to the quarterfinals with a win over No. 8 Richland in last weekend’s regional round. Defending 4A girls champion Woodinville, and two-time defending 3A girls champion Garfield, are also set to play in Thursday’s quarterfinals.
