Steven Yeun has broken his silence over his departure from the role of Sentry in Marvel's upcoming Thunderbolts movie.

The movie is set to feature the Marvel Cinematic Universe's own squad of anti-heroes in an as-yet-undisclosed plot during Phase 6 of the Multiverse Saga, featuring Florence Pugh's Black Widow, David Harbour's Red Guardian and Sebastian Stan as James 'Bucky' Barnes, aka The Winter Soldier.

Following on from Yeun's recent announcement that he'd quit the role of Sentry ahead of filming, the Walking Dead star has given a reason for the departure.

Speaking to Variety, Yeun attributed his exit to scheduling conflicts and the delays to the film caused by the SAG-AFTRA strikes.

"I think for me, time passing and things shifting kind of pulled me out of it. But Jake [Schreier, director], I know, is going to do an incredible job."

However, he assured the publication: "I wanna do a Marvel movie".

Yeun added that he found delivering the news of his exit to movie bosses a challenge: "It took a lot of drafts on email to make sure that I conveyed the sincerity of how sorry I was to have to back out."

When questioned over ideas for a possible Marvel role in the future, Yeun said: "I think it's too early to say that. I probably pissed off too many people leaving, so I'm just gonna say: 'Thank you for having me.'

"I have some ideas... But I heard if you put it out there, you'll never get it, so I'll keep it close to my chest."

It was confirmed that Yeun, who played Glenn Rhee in zombie series The Walking Dead, had joined the cast of upcoming MCU instalment Thunderbolts in February 2023, in an undisclosed role. That role was then confirmed as Sentry – accidentally – by Robert Kirkman (creator of Prime Video's Invincible, which also stars Yeun as its titular character) during an interview late last year. Whether the role will be cut or recast is currently unknown.

Thunderbolts will be released in cinemas on July 25, 2025.
