Steve Martin talks possible retirement after 'Only Murders in the Building': 'This is weirdly it'

After a nearly 60-year run in show business, Steve Martin is thinking about slowing things down.

Martin, who stars in Hulu’s generation-spanning comedy "Only Murders in the Building," opened up about his professional aspirations in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter published Wednesday. The 76-year-old comedian and actor said his recent career success doesn't necessarily change his plans for the future.

"We were very happy just doing the live show," said Martin of his stand-up comedy shows with "Only Murders" co-star Martin Short. "There may be a natural end to that — somebody gets sick, somebody just wears out — but I wouldn’t do it without Marty.

"When this television show is done, I’m not going to seek others. I’m not going to seek other movies. I don’t want to do cameos. This is, weirdly, it."

But Martin also acknowledged that a definitive retirement may not be in the cards for him.

"My wife keeps saying, 'You always say you’re going to retire and then you always come up with something,' " Martin said. "I’m really not interested in retiring. I’m not. But I would just work a little less. Maybe."

Making his television debut as Simon the Pieman on the animated series "Off to See the Wizard" in 1967, Martin established himself as a comic force of nature with roles in 1987's "Planes, Trains & Automobiles," 1991's "Father of the Bride" and 2003's "Cheaper by the Dozen."

The Golden Globe-nominated actor has also written for the big screen, writing on films such as "Three Amigos!," "Roxanne," "L.A. Story" and "The Pink Panther." Martin has also written for "Only Murders in the Building," which he co-created with John Hoffman.

'Only Murders in the Building': Co-stars dish on Cara Delevingne joining season 2 cast

Starring Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez, "Only Murders in the Building" is up for 17 Emmys at this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards, including Martin's nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series and Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series.

Martin said the show’s sophomore season, which debuted in June, was a no-brainer for the cast.

"We were all gung-ho of being excited about doing it," Martin told USA TODAY.
