Stermer rolls rare 804 series, while city tournament champs crowned at Crystal Lanes

It’s not as rare as an eclipse, but a senior throwing an 800 series only comes around about every five or six years, if that often. But, that’s what happened this week at Crystal Lanes when John Stermer reached that magic rare number for senior bowlers.

Competing in the Chilson-Wilcox Senior Men’s League, John was nearly perfect on his way to an 804 series. He opened the action with the first 11 strikes. A swisher that left a stubborn seven-pin kept him from perfection, but that 299 game vaulted him to that rarified air. A couple of single pin spares in the middle of 10 strikes gave him a 268 second game.

Despite losing a couple of solid hits in game three, John came up with enough pins for a 237 game which was just enough to complete the 800 mission. Bruce Stanton’s 857 series during the 2018-19 season was the last eight for the seniors. And that was the best ever for a senior.

In that same league, Doug Mosher appeared out of nowhere and played the role of super sub with a robust 744 series on games of 256, 24 and 242. According to him, he now leads the league in average with a 248 mark. Of course, that’s with three games. Not quite enough games to qualify. Just don’t tell him that.

There were also eight other fellows over the 600 mark in the Chilson-Wilcox League. Tim DeGraw, another super sub, rode a 246 game to a 663 series while Mike Donovan continued his comeback from the IR with a 636 total. Tony Joe rolled a 629 and the Judd McAtee resurgence kept going with a 619 set. Subs Don Pierce and Marion Overhiser tossed scores of 611 and 610 respectively while ole standby Bruce Stanton checked in with a 601 series. This league had enough subs to form a decent naval fleet.

Ken Mattison recorded the only other six for the seniors when he rattled off a 610 series that included a 225 game to pace the Go-Getters Mixed League.

Doug Madison rolls 300

After trimming the lanes with games of 216 and 214, Doug Madison got out the big machine. He cranked that baby up and mowed down 12 racks in a row to cap the evening with a 300 game to finish with a 730 series. That perfect game put him on the ever growing list of 300s as the 26th bowler and the 33rd 300 game so far this season.

Scoring honors for the week goes to Tim DeGraw with his performance in the Tire World of Corning Men’s League. Tim opened the night with a 279 game and closed the evening with a 268 while adding a 221 middle game for a 768 series. Tim also paced the Joey’s Contracting Mixed League with a 735 series that featured a 275 game. Don’t ask. That league also had Rob Guardi with a 723 while Vince Kosty tossed a 715 and Mark Hughson came away with a 713 set.

The Tire World League also had another half-dozen scores over seven. Scott Doan led that pack with a 723 with Steve Annis right on his heels at 720. Bob Cevette tossed a 716 while Jim Sjoblom’s Ruthian 714 was followed by Jason Huntley at the 713 mark. Aiden Kosinski completed the six-pack with a 701 series.

House guy Al Farr grabbed runner-up honors this week with a 763 series to lead the Hatfield Real Estate Men’s League. Al got there with games of 266, 243 and 254. Four other guys topped 700 in this league. Ricky Pruden had a jumbo 747 while Doug McGinnis rode a 277 game to a 743 series. Ron Bush trimmed out a convenient 711 series while Jamie Kennedy capped the sevens with a 708 total.

In other men’s action, Jamie Kennedy paced the Gary Cortright Memorial Mixed League with a 712 total and Ron Gunn fired a 704 to lead the Addison Men’s League.

Here’s a rarity we don’t see too often as well. There were only two ladies over the 600 mark this week. Anita Gennosa earned the ladies honors with a 642 series on games of 220, 216 and 206 in the Cortright League. And Hailey Blencowe continued her weekly venture into 600 territory when she led the Savona Storage Ladies League with a 630 set that featured a 245 game.

City Tournament champions are crowned

After action was completed at Crystal Lanes this past weekend, the Corning Bowling Association crowned winners in four different categories.

In the team event, Farr Two came away with the crown in a tightly knit race. The team of Al Farr, Chad Farr, Ricky Pruden, Joe Crown and Ron Bush rolled a 3,632 total for a seven-pin victory over Stermer’s, a team comprised of John Stermer, Mike Smallcomb, Bill Schierloh, Tony Joe and Gary Gustin. Eight pins behind these guys were Pew Pew Pew with a 3,617 total. That team included the likes of Jamie Kennedy, Jason Huntley, Jason Sowersby, Anita Gennosa and Deon Frost.

Mark Fierro and Shawn Van Etten snared the doubles title with a 1,547 total. That was 13 pins better than the duo of Tom Sirois and Carl Packard. Do the math. The veteran team of Jim Pitts and Doug Mosher notched a third place finish with a 1,507 total.

There was a double winner for singles and all-events crowns. Scott Doan has found new life with a new ball and it showed big time at the city tournament. He captured the singles crown with a 762 series, which was 10 pins higher than Doug Mosher’s 752 while Jean Orchowski grabbed third place with a 749 total.

At the end of the day, Scott Doan also stood tall with the all-events title with a 2,275 total. Jim Pitts notched the runner-up honors in all events with a 2,226 total while always steady Joe Crown was third with a 2,213 total.
