Stephen A. Smith Believes Aaron Rodgers’ Message Is Simple

Earlier today, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Aaron Rodgers had previously turned down a new contract offer from the Green Bay Packers.

The reported two-year extension would have made Rodgers the highest-paid player in football, but the three-time MVP declined the offer, indicating to Schefter that Rodgers’ beef with the Packers’ organization is “not about the money.”

ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith agrees. Earlier today, Smith broke down why he feels Rodgers is angry with his team, saying that the issues are much more personal than money and football.

“The bottom line is this: it’s not about football. It’s not just about the money, and it certainly isn’t about football,” Smith said. “The Green Bay Packers were 13-3 in back-to-back years under Matt LaFleur as the head coach. They went to back-to-back NFC Championship Games, which means they were part of the final four for two consecutive years.

“This is not about football. This is about the way that the Green Bay Packers have treated their star player. They have disregarded him. They have dismissed him. They have minimized him. They disrespected him, and he said ‘bump y’all.'”

Rodgers himself has claimed his complaints are not related to the Packers drafting Jordan Love in 2020, telling Kenny Mayne back in May that “it’s kind of about a philosophy and maybe forgetting that it is about the people that make the thing go. It’s about character, it’s about culture, it’s about doing things the right way.”

Rodgers has been away from the Packers all offseason, missing OTAs and mandatory minicamp. Green Bay reports to training camp next week.

We’ll see if No. 12 is there or not.
