Steelers President Releases Statement On Ben Roethlisberger’s Future

After some back-and-forth, it looks like everything is in order for Ben Roethlisberger to be the Pittsburgh Steelers‘ starting quarterback in 2021.

Roethlisberger wants to return; he’s made that clear. What was left to be decided was how much the organization wanted him back, and if they did, could the quarterback rework his contract.

On Tuesday night, NFL Network’s Aditi Kinkhabwala reported that the Steelers did indeed want Big Ben back, and the next step was to get working on his contract, which carries a massive cap hit of over $41 million for 2021.

This morning, Steelers President Art Rooney II, who met with Roethlisberger yesterday, hinted at the plan for the 38-year-old signal caller in a statement released on Twitter.

“Ben Roethlisberger and I met yesterday morning and we had a productive meeting,” Rooney said. “We were able to discuss a lot of things that relate to where we are and where we want to go. Ben assured me that he is committed to coming back to help us win, and I told Ben that we would like to have him back to help us win a championship.

“We both understand that the next step is to work out Ben’s contract situation.”

Roethlisberger looked worn down physically as the 2020 season played out, and the two-time Super Bowl champion is coming off a miserable four-interception performance in the AFC Wild Card loss to Cleveland.

He has one year left on his current deal, which will need to be reconfigured to alleviate the financial hit the Steelers are set to take.
