State golf roundup, Round 1: Bellarmine Prep’s Bordeaux fires six-under 66, leads by one

Stock file

Scattered among eight golf courses in Washington — ranging from Chehalis to Spokane — hundreds of players teed off Tuesday at the WIAA’s state championships.

The two-round tournament concludes Wednesday, where individuals and teams will be crowned.

How do leaderboards stand after round one?

4A BOYS

Qualchan Golf Course, Spokane, par 72

Bellarmine Prep’s JJ Bordeaux fired a six-under 66 at Qualchan Golf Course and leads the field by one stroke ahead of Wednesday’s final round.

A bogey on the par-three fourth was Bordeaux’s lone blemish in what was otherwise a pristine round. Bordeaux grabbed early birdies on two and three, and birded the par-four eighth for a two-under front nine. He posted a bogey-free, four-under 32 on the back.

Sumner’s Ryan Takeshita birdied 17 and 18 to pull within one shot on Tuesday afternoon. Takeshita tallied seven birdies and two bogeys en route to a five-under 67.

Owen Price, Bordeaux’s teammate at Bellarmine, sits just three shots back after posting a three-under 69.

Sumner’s Brock Maulding posted a four-under 32 on Qualchan’s back nine, a strong recovery that put him in fifth place and one under par for the day (71).

Bordeaux was the 4A runner-up in 2022, posting rounds of 71-71 for a total of 142 (-2) at Indian Summner Country Club. Redmond’s Akshay Anand, no longer in the field, stormed back in last year’s second round (73-68) to win by a single shot.
