State golf roundup: Mason, Garden City girls and Sonora boys come away with gold

Multiple golf teams from West Texas finished the 2024 golf season on the medal stand as the season concluded for boys and girls in Austin on Tuesday.

Last week, the Sonora boys golf team took home the program's first state golf trophy after scoring a 626 after two days of competition. The Broncos finished nine strokes ahead of runner-up New Home, whom they beat in a sudden-death playoff elimination game in the regional tournament a week before.

Dylan Ford, the defending individual state champ, finished tied with Weston Fisher for sixth overall with 149, Jayden Wllborn scored 159, Juan Castillo had 169 and Raul Arrendo rounded out the state title with a 179.

"I was so proud of the kids," Sonora golf coach Mitch Kay said. "I was extremely happy for them. They set out to accomplish this goal, I'm not going to say the goal was to win (the state title), but they had the idea. They really wanted to go battle and it became obvious that we had the ability to go win it, so for them to see that through was awesome."
