All-state boys basketball: See who made the grade among Classes B, C and D competitors

A Co-Player of the Year and two first-team selections highlight Section 4’s representation on New York State Sports Writers Association Class B-C-D all-state boys basketball teams for 2023-24.

Top billing belongs to senior Class C Co-Player of the Year Abram Wasileski, best of the bunch for a Moravia squad that last month in Glens Falls claimed the program’s second state championship.

Most decorated of Section 4’s honorees, of course, is Waverly senior Joey Tomasso. He is a first-team pick in Class B, as was South Kortright/Andes senior Connor Quarino in Class D.

All-state teams are compiled by the NYSSWA’s Steve Grandin, Saratoga Springs resident who formerly served as sports editor of The Saratogian, following consultation with an extensive network of media members statewide. All-state teams in Classes AAA, AA and A are expected to be revealed next week.

Wasileski, Moravia’s all-time scoring leader and BCANY Class C Player of the Year, was a 19.8-per-game scorer. He was third-team all-state as a junior.

Tomasso tops Waverly’s all-time scoring charts with 1,782 points and is the program’s leader with 177 three-point goals. He holds Wolverines records for points in a game (49) and highest per-game average (30.9 as a junior).

Waverly's Joey Tomasso goes up for a shot during a 60-48 win over Dryden in a Section 4 Class B boys basketball semifinal Feb. 28, 2024 at Waverly High School.

This marks his second consecutive first-team basketball selection to go with two in football – last fall co-Player of the Year after quarterbacking his squad to a Class C state championship.

Quarino averaged 29.8 points per game as BCANY Section 4 Class D Player of the Year. He was a first-team all-stater last season as a 26.8-per-game scorer.
