Starting 5 of the century: Holland boys basketball - vote for sixth man

The Sentinel has picked a basketball starting five for each high school from 2000 to the present and will run the all-century teams during the holiday break. Who should join them? Vote for who should be the sixth man. Today: Holland boys.

Here is The Holland Sentinel's starting five. Vote for the sixth man below. The poll will remain open until Jan. 14.

Demetrius Lake

The first player in Holland history to earn all-state honors three years in a row, Lake scored more than 2,000 points in his career, by far breaking the school record, and one of the top 30 marks in state history. He averaged nearly 30 points per game as a sophomore, junior and senior. Scored 24 in a quarter, hit 230 career 3s, that rank No. 11 in state history, and once hit 20 consecutive free throws. After graduation, he went on to play at Grand Valley State and Olivet before playing overseas.

Hall scored 20 points per game as a senior at Holland, leading the Dutch to a back-to-back district championships and earned all-state honors in the process. He also averaged 9.2 rebounds and 5.1 assists as a senior, showing his all-around dominance. As a junior averaged 16.5 points per game. Went on to play at Grand Valley State where he totaled close to 1,000 career points.

This left-handed point guard went from good to great in his final two years of high school. He had the ability to drive to the basket like few others in area history, but could also step back and nail a 3. He was also a great on-ball defender, which helped lead him to all-state honors, then All-MIAA honors in college while playing for Hope.

Coreontae DeBerry

At 6-10, DeBerry had to battle double- and triple-teams all while growing into his big frame. Once he did, he was nearly impossible to stop. He earned all-state honors as a senior before signing with Detroit. He then ended up at Cincinnati where he helped the Bearcats make two runs in the NCAA tournament. After graduating from Cincinnati, DeBerry played professionally in the NBA G League, then overseas in several countries.

One of the top post players in area history, Weatherspoon used his strength to cause matchup nightmares for opponents. He was an athletic player who could score under the basket and on the perimeter. That led him to earning Holland Sentinel Player of the Year honors.
