Stark County prosecutor to host town hall meetings

CANTON – Stark County Prosecutor Kyle L. Stone will host his annual town hall meetings over the next several weeks.

Stone will discuss a series of topics relevant to the criminal justice system and give residents the opportunity to ask questions. Individual cases will not be discussed. Light refreshments will be served.

The meetings are:

  • Lexington Township: 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Lexington Township Hall / Station, 14555 Gaskill Drive NE

  • Sandy Township: 6 to 7 p.m. May 15, Mohawk Valley District Fire Station, 8285 Waynesburg Drive SE

  • Plain Township: 6 to 7 p.m. May 23, Plain Township Hall, 2600 Easton St. NE

  • Jackson Township: 6 to 7 p.m. June 12, Jackson Township Hall, 5735 Wales Road NW

Women’s Impact Inc. names new executive director

CANTON – The Women’s Impact Inc. board of directors has named Stephanie Cargill as the organization’s new executive director. Cargill will assume the role July 1.

Most recently the communications director at Stark County District Library, Cargill has experience in strategy, leadership, public relations, marketing and communications. A lifetime resident of Stark County, she has served on various boards and committees in the community, sits on the board of trustees of the Canton Ballet, volunteers and performs at many local theaters, and is a graduate of the 36th class of Leadership Stark County.

Cargill has been a member of Women’s Impact Inc. for six years, serving on the board of directors for more than three years. As executive director, Cargill will be responsible for the management of the organization, building collaborative partnerships and relationships in the community, and implementing the organization’s strategic plan.

Library trustee gets second term

CANTON – Robin Mingo-Miles has been appointed to a second seven-year term on the board of trustees of the Stark County District Library, according to a news release from the Stark County Court of Common Pleas, which is responsible for appointing three members of the board.

The seven-member board meets monthly every third Tuesday. Special meetings are called on an as-needed basis. Mingo-Miles served on the board’s Finance and Audit Committee during her first term.

Marine Corps League Detachment invites new members

CANTON − Marine Corps League Detachment 277 McKinley is an organization of male and female Marine veterans, Navy corpsmen and Navy chaplains. The league meets the second Thursday of each month at 7:30 p.m. at American Legion Post 44, 1633 Cleveland Ave. NW. New members are welcome.

In observance of Memorial Day, the organization places flags on veterans' graves at Sunset Hills North, participates in two color guard ceremonies and marches in Canton's parade. The organization fundraises at the Stark County Fair, and in October, it starts the Toys for Tots campaign for Stark County. In November, it provides the color guard for Lake High School in honor of Veterans Day.

It is organizing a food drive for the Honor Home, 2832 34th St. NE, which provides housing for homeless male and female veterans. For more information about the organization or its activities, email John Woofter at jwoofter1@neo.rr.com.

International Cultural Exchange Services names local coordinator

CANTON – International Cultural Exchange Services has named Sonia Atabong as a new local coordinator. She will be working with families and schools in Canton and in the surrounding area. She is looking for families that would like to host for the school year of 2024.

Exchange students live as a member of the host family − not a guest or boarder. They participate in family activities, follow host family rules, and help with chores. Students have their own medical insurance and spending money to cover all personal expenses. Host families provide room and board and parental guidance.

Atabong is available to answer questions, give advice, and provide general support to students and host families throughout the experience.

Abortion-loss support group for men to meet Wednesday

CANTON − ARROWS group abortion-loss support for men will meet online at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The online group meets at 7 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month. For the link and more information, call or text 330-834-8224. The support group is designed for men and led by men.

Distracted driving simulated driving experience for teens is May 16

MASSILLON − The Stark County Sheriff's Office invites local teens and their parents to participate in the "Teens vs. Distracted Driving - Simulated Driving Experience" at 6 p.m. May 16 at the Law Enforcement Training Center, 143 First St. SE.

Designed specifically for teenagers, this program aims to highlight the dangers of distracted driving and emphasize the importance of safe and defensive driving practices. Participants will use a driving simulator, providing a hands-on experience that demonstrates the potential consequences of distracted driving. Instructors with AAA will offer information and answer any driving-related questions.

Bulldogs Walk to End Hunger is May 18

CANTON − The McKinley High School National Honor Society is sponsoring a Walk to End Hunger on May 18.

Profits from The Bulldogs Walk to End Hunger will primarily benefit Feed Kids First, which ensures no child will go without food and basic needs by securing and distributing food directly to children. A small portion of the proceeds will go to McKinley National Honor Society so future National Honor Society students can continue to create and support such events.

The cost to register is $25. Pre-registration includes a T-shirt and lunch. Those who register after Wednesday are not guaranteed to receive a T-shirt. Register to walk and/or donate at https://ccsdistrict.hometownticketing.com/embed/all.

On-site registration is 9 to 10 a.m. May 18, with the walk beginning at 10 a.m. at McKinley High School, 2323 17th St. NW. Lunch will be at 11 a.m.

Massillon Rotary Foundation accepting grant applications

MASSILLON − The Massillon Rotary Foundation is accepting grant applications through June 30 from nonprofit organizations that sponsor projects focusing on health, wellness and other charitable purposes.

The foundation provides grants specifically for the Massillon and western Stark County areas. Grant applications are reviewed quarterly. Applications and guidelines are available via the link at www.massillonrotary.org under the Rotary Foundation tab.

Navarre Bethlehem Township Historical Society meets

NAVARRE − The Navarre Bethlehem Township Historical Society met April 10. Janie Talbott was honored with gift cards for her 14 years of service as past president of the Society. Longtime volunteer Jack Conkle, who was celebrating his 90th birthday, was also recognized.

The historical society’s next meeting will be 10 a.m. May 8 in the education building. The public is welcome to attend.

The Historical Society is getting ready for the annual village wide garage sale May 16, 17 and 18 with many donated items for sale at the education building behind the Mathews Museum. All proceeds help the historical society, which keeps the artifacts of the local area documented and sets up displays of the community’s past businesses. Anyone who would like to know about their ancestors who lived in Navarre can request information and the society will research its records.

The Mathews Museum will be open for tours from 9 until 11 Wednesday mornings June 1 until Nov. 1. If you need a different time, call 330-879-5938 and leave a message so the society can schedule a time that is more convenient for you.

Donations of aluminum cans in the barrels beside the education building are appreciated. The donations of aluminum cans help pay for the utilities for the three buildings the historical society maintains.

Friday, 9:30 to 10:30 p.m. at the Hoover Trail, East Maple Street Trailhead: Navigating the Night Sky. Learn about stars, planets, constellations, nebulae, and galaxies with The Wilderness CenterAstronomy Club as they navigate the night sky around us. Practice using telescopes, learn how tonavigate the stars, and where to look during different seasons! Feel free to bring your ownequipment (telescopes, binoculars, cameras, etc.). Registration is required. The program will becanceled if the sky is cloudy or the weather is inclement.

May 12 and 26, 2 p.m.: Quail Hollow Manor House Tours. The guided tour of the 100-year-old, 1920s-era, H.B. Stewart Manor House lasts about one hour. The building does not have an elevator, so be prepared to climb stairsWalk-ins only. No pre-registration is required. The fee is $5 cash at the door for ages 5 and up with amaximum of $20 per family.
