Star Trek: Strange New Worlds follows the escapades of Capt. Christopher Pike—Kirk’s predecessor—and his adventures on board the U.S.S. Enterprise. Here’s what we know so far about Season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

What is Star Trek: Strange New Worlds about?

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds takes place in an era when Capt. Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) manned the helm of the U.S.S. Enterprise. With his Number One, Una Chin-Riley (Rebecca Romijn) and Vulcan Science Officer Spock (Ethan Peck) at his side, Pike and the Enterprise will explore new worlds around the galaxy.

The three characters previously appeared in Season 2 of Star Trek: Discovery.

What happened in the first season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds?

The series kicked off with a reluctant Christopher Pike returning to space and helming the U.S.S. Enterprise after his first officer, Una Chin-Riley goes missing during a first contact mission.

While each episode mostly follows a single mission, some storylines run throughout the season, including:

• The evolution and dissolution of Spock and T'Pring's (Gia Sandhu) relationship (remember that Freaky Friday body switch between the two)

• Dr. M'Benga's (Babs Olusanmokun) attempt to keep his ill daughter, Rukiya (Sage Arrindell) in a transporter loop until he can find a cure for the disease. This ultimately involves a nebula saving Rukiya but sending them into a fantasy world of his daughter's making.

• The reintroduction of the Gorn into the Star Trek Universe with Hemmer (Bruce Horak) sacrificing himself to save the crew.

In the first season finale, Pike gets an opportunity to see two different timelines—one where he dies prematurely and one where he does not and how each action he takes now affects both timelines. In the present day, Number One is arrested for being a genetically altered Illyrian.

What happened in Season 2 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds?

What didn't happen? Spock disobeyed orders and took the Enterprise out into disputed space, Number One (Rebecca Romijn) faced a court-martial and dishonorable dismissal, La'An time traveled and met up with James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley), but not the one she knew in her timeline, and the crew discovered a strange new world of animation when the show crossed over with Star Trek: Lower Decks. Boimler (Jack Quaid) and Beckett (Tawny Newsome) entered a portal that took them over into live-action. Spock (Ethan Peck) found himself in a quandary after an accident made him completely human. The crew also found themselves singing in the musical episode "Subspace Rhapsody" that included some catchy tunes and a Broadway-like soundtrack played on repeat on many Trekkers' iPods! They faced a Gorn attack and we met a young Lt. Montgomery Scott (Martin Quinn). By the end of the season finale, everyone on the planet's surface had been beamed aboard the Gorn ship!

Meet the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 cast

Anson Mount (Capt. Christopher Pike)

Captain Pike is the immediate predecessor to Capt. James T. Kirk on the Enterprise. The character has been played by four actors so far. Jeffrey Hunter originated the role in the pilot episode, but after the pilot was rejected he withdrew from the series and the show was reimagined with Kirk at the helm instead. Within the original series, Sean Kenney plays an older Pike with the show using footage from the unaired pilot as archival footage of the character. In the recent Star Trek film by J.J. Abrams and Justin Lin, Bruce Greenwood plays Pike and is mentor to a young James Kirk (Chris Pine).

Mount is probably best known for his role as Cullen Bohannon on AMC’s Hell on Wheels. He also starred in the short-lived Marvel series, Inhumans and has appeared on Dollhouse, Law & Order, Lost and Smallville. When asked about being cast as Captain Pike, Mount said, “I just never thought I would end up captaining the Enterprise. Every single day I’m on the set—I’m not exaggerating—is both disbelief and a feeling of tremendous gratitude.”

Rebecca Romijn (Number One/Una Chin-Riley)

Number One’s real name is Una Chin-Riley and was first portrayed by Majel Barrett, who was Gene Roddenberry‘s second wife. She also portrayed Lwaxana Troi, the mother of Counselor Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis) on Star Trek: The Next Generation. She was also the voice of the ship’s computer from the franchise’s premiere until 2009 (Barrett died in 2008).

Romijn made her start as a model—with Cosmopolitan and Sports Illustrated covers. She also had Tommy Hilfiger and Victoria’s Secret ads in her portfolio—before delving into acting. In recent years, Romijn has been a part of several successful franchises including the X-Men films and television shows like Ugly Betty, Eastwick and The Librarians.

Ethan Peck (Lieutenant Spock)

Ethan Peck takes on the iconic role of Vulcan Starfleet Officer Spock. The role of Spock was originated by Leonard Nimoy in the original Star Trek series back in the 1960s and Peck plays a younger version of the character—in his pre-Kirk days on the Enterprise.

Peck is the grandson of legendary actor Gregory Peck (To Kill a Mockingbird, Roman Holiday). He previously starred as Patrick Verona in the ABC Family television series, 10 Things I Hate About You, based on the film of the same name that starred Julia Stiles, Heath Ledger and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Celia Rose Gooding (Cadet Nyota Uhura)

Nyota Uhura is only cadet in this series, but as we all know she later becomes a Lieutenant Commander. Nichelle Nichols originated the role in the originate Star Trek series and Zoe Saldana played Uhura in the reboot films helmed by J.J. Abrams and later Justin Lin.

Gooding became interested in acting after seeing her mother, LaChanze win a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical for The Color Purple. She got her professional acting start in Jagged Little Pill, the musical where she originated the role of Frankie Healy and was nominated for a Tony for Best Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical. She won a Grammy for Best Musical Theater album for Jagged Little Pill in 2021.

Jess Bush (Nurse Christine Chapel)

Nurse Chapel, the ship’s medic, was originally played by Majel Barrett in the original Star Trek series.

Bush, an Australian, got her start as a contestant on Australia’s Next Top Model. She previously starred in Playing for Keeps, a television series about the wives of Australian Rules footballers.

Christina Chong (La’an Noonien-Singh)

Lieutenant Noonien-Singh is the Enterprise’s Chief of Security and is related to Khan (played by Ricardo Montalban in the original series and in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan). Benedict Cumberbatch took on the role in the 2013 film, Star Trek Into the Darkness.

Chong has starred in several TV series and mini-series including Line of Duty, Bulletproof, and 24: Live Another Day. She has guest starred on such shows as Whitechapel, Black Mirror, and Doctor Who.

Fun Fact: Chong's dog, Runa, is featured in the episode, "The Elysian Kingdom," where Chong's character plays a fairytale princess in an altered storybook reality.

Babs Olusanmokun (Dr. M’Benga)

Dr. M’Benga was played by Booker Bradshaw in the original series. The history for the character shows he served under both Christopher Pike and James T. Kirk.

Olusanmokun most recently starred in Dune and has guest starred on Black Mirror, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, and Sneaky Pete. He is a competitive third degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Melissa Navia (Lt. Erica Ortegas)

Ortegas is the ship’s pilot and quickly proves her mettle. She also provides a bit of comic relief in the show.

Navia has made appearances on Bull, New Amsterdam, and Billions.

Carol Kane (Pelia)

Kane joined the season 2 cast in a recurring role as Pelia, a centuries-old Lanthanite who filled the opening of Chief Engineer on the Enterprise. It's unclear if Kane will return to the role for season 3 or if Pelia will move on to the next gig and Scotty (Martin Quinn) will take over in engineering. The role of Scotty was originally played by James Doohan.

Paul Wesley (James T. Kirk)

Wesley joined the cast in season 2 as a recurring guest star as the iconic character, James T. Kirk, made famous by William Shatner in the original series and later by Chris Pine in the recent feature films.

Wesley is best known for his role as Stefan Salvatore on The Vampire Diaries.

Dan Jeannotte (George Samuel "Sam" Kirk)

Jeannotte stars in a recurring guest star role as Sam Kirk, James T. Kirk's older brother. Jeannotte has appeared in various Hallmark Channel movies like The Royal Nanny and Sweeter Than Chocolate, and in recurring roles on Reign and The Bold Type.

Martin Quinn (Montgomery Scott)

Quinn took on the role of Montgomery Scott, who was played by James Doohan in the Original series. Scott was introduced to the Strange New Worlds audience in the season 2 finale, "Hegemony," after he escaped the Gorn in a shuttle and landed on the planet where he finds Pike and his crew.

Who is not returning for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3?

Bruce Horak (Hemmer)

While Horak's character, Hemmer, died in Season 1, Horak returned as Hemmer in a hallucination scene and as General Garkog, the singing Klingon in "Subspace Rhapsody," in last season's musical episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Perhaps we'll see him again this season as another character!

Who will be directing Season 3 episodes of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds?

No word yet, but we hope to see Jonathan Frakes behind the camera again. Frakes directed "Those Old Scientists," the crossover episode with Star Trek: Lower Decks. We hope to see Blair Witch Project director Eduardo Sanchez as well. Sanchez directed "Among the Lotus Eaters" episode last season.

Fun fact: When you hear Boimler yelling "Riker!" as he sits in the saddle in the captain's office in "Those Old Scientists," it's an ad-lib on Quaid's part and not scripted. It's an homage to the character Frakes played on Star Trek: The Next Generation and his signature way of sitting down (at least when he sat down in armless chairs on the series. In chatting with Frakes, he said his wife, General Hospital star Genie Francis, could not stop laughing when she saw the scene.
