Its star slowed, Providence Academy wins clash of Class 2A powers

Brooke Hohenecker made back-to-back three-point shots with about seven minutes to play, giving Providence Academy the lead for good in a 98-90 girls basketball victory Friday over host Minnehaha Academy.

Providence Academy (14-2) is ranked first in Class 2A by Minnesota Basketball News, and Minnehaha Academy (16-3) is ranked second.

With leading scorer Maddyn Greenway falling short of her scoring average, Providence Academy's depth helped the Lions overcome a double-digit deficit early in the second half.

Hohenecker made a corner three-pointer after a pass from Greenway with 7:23 left in the game to give the Redhawks a 76-75 lead. She made a shot from the opposite side on the next possession. The Lions built the lead to as much as 11 with just over two minutes left.

Minnehaha Academy's Addi Mack scored a game-high 33 points, including 13 in the first seven minutes of the second half. The Lions held her to eight points the rest of the game. Sinae Hill scored 23 points for the Redhawks.

Greenway finished with 20 points; she was averaging 34.2 going into the game. Ari Peterson led the Lions with 26 points.

The game was a prelude to a halftime ceremony honoring Chet Holmgren, former Minnehaha Academy star now in the NBA and in town for his Oklahoma City Thunder's game Saturday against the Timberwolves.
