PETOSKEY — St. Michael High School will be welcoming a new headmaster next school year, with Kevin Weed joining the school staff.

Weed is currently an English and journalism teacher at East Jordan High School. With more than 25 years of teaching experience, Weed is making the switch over to administration.

While the move may seem like a big one, Weed said he doesn't "think it's that big of a stretch."

In previous teaching roles, Weed worked to create hands-on learning opportunities for students to keep them engaged, and he said he feels that helped prepare him for this type of role. He's also served as a principal before.

"I'm fired up to help St. Michael grow in student population and in awareness," he said.

Weed said his children went to St. Michael High School and he was impressed with the Chesterton style of teaching, providing students with a rigorous curriculum and helping teach them about discipline.

His oldest graduated from St. Michael last year and his other two sons will be returning next year.

While Weed hasn't stepped into the position yet, he is already thinking about different programs he can bring to St. Michael, including a hybrid program that would welcome in homeschool students on an occasional basis.

Weed said he appreciates the classical model of learning, which emphasizes having students read the original texts rather than a shortened summary.

"Reading the original texts is a harder thing. It takes students willing to work more to go dive deeper into this more intellectual text, but that's what's happening at St. Michael's," he said. "That's what I saw with my kids when they took the classes there two years ago, and I thought 'Wow, this is really impressive stuff.'"
