'Squid Game: The Challenge' trailer re-creates the show's premise a little too well

If you've been eagerly awaiting a second season of "Squid Game," Netflix has something equally exciting in store.

The streaming service just released the trailer for its new reality competition, "Squid Game: The Challenge," and it's eerily reminiscent of the popular Korean series.

The two-minute clip begins with a voice saying, "Attention, all players. It is now time for the next game."

The group of contestants then enters a game hall and everyone is amazed at how familiar the set looks.

“Oh, my God!" one exclaims.

Young-hee, an animatronic doll from the show, then says, "Let the game begin."

Players instantly start running, and things get real pretty quickly.

“This is a savage game,” one says as contestants grab at a tray of food.

In the original TV series, players compete to the death, but contestants only pretend to die in the reality competition.

“Oh s---,” one says as they get pelted with a paintball.

Alliances are formed pretty quickly, with one contestant saying, “This game has to be played with strategy.”

Backstabbing also abounds, as one player describes with the following statement: “I’m gonna be your best friend but I will absolutely double-cross you.”

Another supports that sentiment, saying, “You can’t trust anybody in here.”

At one point in the trailer, contestants are tasked with selecting other players to eliminate.

"People's true colors are starting to come out," one says as things begin to get tense.

And that's just the beginning. Read on to learn everything you need to know about the upcoming reality competition.

How does it work?

"Squid Game: The Challenge" features 456 contestants vying for a grand prize. To win, they have to play a series of games that will push them "to their limits," according to Netflix.

The 10 episodes will feature "opportunistic alliances, cutthroat strategies and timely betrayals."

When does it come out?

You won't have to wait long for "Squid Game: The Challenge" to premiere. The new series starts streaming on Netflix on Wednesday, Nov. 22.

What does the winner get?

The cunning player who beats out the competition will take home an impressive $4.56 million. Per Netflix, it's the streaming service's largest reality TV cash prize yet.

What has the creator of 'Squid Game' said about the reality series?

In 2022, "Squid Game" creator Hwang Dong-hyuk shared his thoughts on the upcoming reality series while speaking to the press at the Emmys, as reported by TV Line.

"I think that even though our show does carry quite a heavy message — and I know that there are some concerns on taking that message and creating it into a reality show with a cash prize — I feel like when you take things too seriously, that’s really not the best way to go for the entertainment industry. It doesn’t really set a great precedent," he said.

“So, I would say that reproductions of such efforts are going to bring new meaning to the industry,” he continued. “And I hope that this is going to be a great new direction for the industry overall.”
