Squid Game: The Challenge Renewed for Season 2 at Netflix

Break out the dalgona cookies: Squid Game: The Challenge has been renewed for Season 2. Netflix announced the news just hours ahead of Season 1’s big finale and winner reveal, which releases at 9/8c Wednesday night.

“There was no red light in our decision to greenlight Season 2 of Squid Game: The Challenge, the most ambitious unscripted show we’ve premiered at Netflix,” Netflix VP of Nonfiction Series Brandon Riegg said in a statement. “We’re so excited to continue the franchise of Squid Game with our team in Korea, and producers at Studio Lambert and The Garden for this epic competition series.”

The reality competition series — which is modeled after Netflix’s South Korean smash hit Squid Game — follows 456 real players as they battle it out for a life-changing $4.56 million prize. “As they compete through a series of games inspired by the original show — plus surprising new additions — their strategies, alliances and character will be put to the test while competitors are eliminated around them,” reads the official description. The original scripted drama holds the record as Netflix’s most popular series of all time, with over 1.65 billion view hours in the first 28 days following its September 2021 premiere. That series was renewed in June of 2022, with several new actors joining its ranks.
