Squid Game: The Challenge Reality Series Unleashes ‘Savage’ Competition in Full Trailer — WATCH

Let the non-lethal games begin.

In the full trailer for the new reality competition Squid Game: The Challenge, real-life players must make it through classic childhood games like Red Light, Green Light; Battleship and the ever-frustrating claw machine if they hope to secure the biggest prize in game show history: $4.56 million.

Based on the hit Korean drama Squid Game, the Netflix reality series enlists 456 players to “compete through a series of games inspired by the original show” as well as some “surprising new additions,” according to the official synopsis. Participants’ strategies, alliances and character will be “put to the test while competitors are eliminated around them.”

The 10-episode series will make its debut Wednesday, Nov. 22, with new episodes dropping weekly until the finale on Dec. 6. (Netflix would not provide details on the exact release pattern.)

The above sneak peek promises a “savage” game, as one player described it, with alliances formed and betrayals imminent. But unlike the dystopian drama, which grotesquely killed off its losing players, the eliminated participants in The Challenge will simply leave the competition empty-handed.

When the reality spinoff was first announced, many maligned the show for trivializing the violent drama’s brutal critique of capitalism. Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk defended the competition series to reporters in last year’s Emmys press room, saying, “Even though our show does carry quite a heavy message… when you take things too seriously, that’s really not the best way to go for the entertainment industry… I hope that this is going to be a great new direction for the industry overall.”
