'Squid Game' Season 2: Everything To KnowSquid Game - Netflix

Netflix’s Squid Game, a hugely successful breakout series that first aired on the streaming platform in 2021, tells the eerie story of a secret contest where debtors risk their lives to play a slew of children’s games in hopes of winning a massive cash pot.

The Korean series earned a jaw-dropping 1.65 billion viewing hours in 28 days after its release, making it the all time No.1 show on Netflix, according to Variety. It was also nominated for 14 Emmys in 2022, and raked in six wins across categories. People truly couldn't stop obsessing over the show, going so far as to dress up as the characters from the show for Halloween that year.

So, of course, people have been super excited to hear that Netflix will be dropping a second season at some point. The show's director actually confirmed the news on X (formerly Twitter) way back in June of 2022.

What will happen in season 2 of Squid Game? And what happened at the end of season 1 again? Here’s the deal.

What happened at the end of season 1?

Squid Game's inaugural season starts out with divorced dad Seong Gi-Hun getting invited to play a series of children’s games for a chance at win a massive cash prize. He’s taken to a mystery location and put in a green tracksuit, along with 455 other players.

They’re all watched over by masked guards in pink jumpsuits, along with the Front Man, who wears a black mask and black uniform. When people lose a game during the competition, they are killed, and more money is added to the cash pot. Gi-Hun ends up forming an alliance with his friend Cho Sang-Woo, along with Kang Sae-Byeok to try to survive.

At the end, Gi-Hun, Sae-Byeok, and Sang-Woo are the only ones left. Sang-Woo stabs Sae-Byeok in the dormitories after a celebratory steak dinner and she dies. Gi-Hun gets the upper hand in a final game but decides to forfeit the winnings so he and Sang-Woo can walk away. Sang-Woo ends up killing himself and asks Gi-Hun to take care of his mother as he dies.

Gi-Hun is ultimately named the winner of Squid Game.

But fans also learn that the games are a form of entertainment for a group of uber-wealthy people, and that the Front Man is the missing brother of one the police detectives working on the case, Detective Hwang. The Front Man ends up shooting Hwang, who falls off of a cliff (it's unclear if he dies).

Gi-Hun takes care of Sae-Byeok and Sang-Woo’s family financially and learns that Squid Game is still going on. He ends up turning back, seemingly to get revenge on the Front Man and the people behind the Squid Game.

Is there a trailer?

Yes, Netflix has released a teaser trailer for season 2. You can watch it here:

What is the plot for season 2?

The official plot of season 2 hasn’t been revealed. However, actor Lee Jung-Jae, who plays Gi-Hun shared some insights with People in 2021. “I have no idea what will happen or the scale of it, but the only thing [director Hwang] did tell me was that Seong Gi-Hun is going to be in the show again, and he's going to be playing in the arena again,” he said.

Keep in mind that Gi-Hun now has bright red hair and a boatload of cash, so it’s tricky to know exactly how he’ll sneak in without getting noticed, and how this will all play out.

The teaser trailer shows the dormitories, arena, and guards in pink uniforms, along with a lot of players in green tracksuits. Plus, the director wrote on X in 2022 that, "the man in the suit with ddjakji might be back" and "you'll also be introduced to Young-hee's boyfriend, Cheol-su."

ICYMI, Young-hee is the creepy doll that the contestants played Red Light, Green Light with during season 1. So... if her "boyfriend" is involved, it definitely sounds like there are more games to be played.

Which cast members will be in season 2?

There are a few characters who will returning for a second round, according to an X statement from series creator Hwang Dong-Hyuk: Gi-Han (played by Lee Jung-Jae), the Front Man (played by Lee Byung-Hun), and "the man in the suit with ddakji" (played by Gong Yoo).
