After a full week of canceled classes due to the ice storm, two Lane County school districts extended their closures to Monday.

Springfield Public Schools, which serves 9,000 students, sent out an alert on Sunday letting families know they would be closed to start the week.

The ice storm hit Springfield and SPS hard, causing power outages citywide and downed trees and branches on nearly every street.

As of Sunday night, SPS still had three school buildings without power: Thurston High, Agnes Stewart Middle and Briggs Middle. Numerous schools also had damage due to the storms, leading SPS to declare a state of emergency on Jan. 17.

Some SPS schools could be returning to class on Tuesday. Staff were allowed into buildings with power Monday to prepare for students' return.

Families will be notified Monday evening about returning to school on Tuesday.

South Lane School District remains closed

South Lane School District, which serves 2,700 students, was closed on Monday as well. On Friday, the district posted on Facebook, stating while some of the school buildings have had power restored, the district did not have enough facilities up and running.

SLSD canceled school on Monday but planned to open on Tuesday. Al Kennedy High School was still without power as of Sunday. If needed, AKHS classes could be held at an alternative location.
