Ryan Lochte undergoes surgery after injuring himself on inflatable waterslide

Former Olympic gold medalist Ryan Lochte is recovering from a torn meniscus after undergoing surgery due to an inflatable waterslide mishap.

Lochte's wife, Kayla Reid, posted an image on Instagram that showed Lochte giving a thumbs up from a hospital bed. The post read: "A legend of lessons… don’t race down an inflatable kids water slide folks!"

Lochte added the picture to his Instagram story, noting "surgery was a success."

The details of the incident are unclear, but his wife confirmed he did tear his meniscus, which is a layer of cartilage in the knee.

Ryan Lochte missed out on Tokyo Olympics

Lochte's injury comes months after he failed to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics. Lochte, 37, attempted to qualify for his fifth Olympics in June, but fell short in the 200-meter individual medley, his best race.

Following the race, Lochte said he didn't think he was done with competitive swimming. He hasn't ruled out trying to make it back to the Olympics in 2024.
